Re: Retirement - Managing your money

I've been retired for 9 years now, zero debt of any kind. I have found that the ideal baseline number to live a pretty amazing life is roughly $180k/year. As crazy as it may sound I could cut that...

Re: Starlink Roam

$200/month is still a bargain. This was inevitable, so glad to see the future is starting to take shape and yes, hopefully it will still work on ocean crossings. I'd be surprised if it didn't. ...

Re: New Lagoon 55

Do you know if you actually like the "sailing" aspect of slowly traveling the world? The L55 is a sweet boat, but honestly I'd get a Nordhavn 55 or 60 before I'd consider a Lagoon. Like others have...

Re: New Elba 45 on order

The youtube channel "Distant Shores" did a great video on their system that answers your questions much more eloquently than I could. Plenty of time to research and make the right decision for your...

Re: The Virgin Island's are open for business!!

My healthy 70 year old uncle and 68 year old cousin gave up their life last year to “just a bad case of the flu”. Thanks for letting me know it’s no big deal and nothing we should be worried about,...

Re: New Elba 45 on order

Not a FP, but we chose to go with 400ah at 48V and eliminated the generator all together, 2000W solar and Intergrel charging system. All electric appliances so only fuel on the boat will be diesel....

Re: Mavic Pro drone - how to fly off a boat?

Like others have said, just practice on land quite a few times first. Landing on a moving vessel is most challenging and we just avoid that unless conditions are dead calm. We have the Mavic 2 Zoom...

Re: 60 foot Catamaran for Couple?

My $0.02 is a lot really depends on your plans for the 3 year adventure. If it’s simply going to be island hopping in the Bahamas/Caribbean then you’ll be fine buying a used floating condo, I’d even...

Re: The Virgin Island's are open for business!!

Thanks for the first hand account sailmontana, we will be there 25 days starting mid-December. Hopefully it will be worth our while. We are seasoned Covid travelers though and don't get our...

Re: Critique My Plan

So for a point of reference I retired at 43 and it was absolutely the best decision of my life, it was only then that I got into sailing. Now I’m 50 and have chartered all around the world having a...

Re: The Virgin Island's are open for business!!

Man, I hope the previous two comments are correct and all the pain in the ass stuff keeps the riff raff factor down. I agree for a week it’s definitely not worth the hassle until Covid restrictions...

Re: 60 foot Catamaran for Couple?

I couldn't agree more Chotu, hell if anything owning a bigger boat just shows people how crazy you are for lighting money on fire through boat ownership! In the end get what you want and fits your...

Re: The nitty gritty, Making money while you're cruising The South Pacific

Fantastic reply WingSail! This is the kind of post that makes me keep coming back to this forum. I can only hope my wife and I have 1/4 of your success. Congrats on a life very well lived to you...

Re: Best Reviews on YouTube.

I admittedly (along with my wife) watch a ton of different reviews on YouTube. We do this to have a good idea about what we want to take a closer look at once we are actually on the different boats....

Re: Privilege Signature 510 vs 580

So these were 2 of the boats we considered as well. The 580 is enormous, and although we loved the concept of it, I just kept coming back to it is just going to be my wife and I for the vast...

Re: Your 2022 Cruising Plans/Philosophy?

My opinion is that we are going to see this pandemic become an endemic that will just sort of be with us forever. That being said, 2022 will still be rough from an international travel standpoint...

Re: How much cash to retire?

Yes sir, it should really just be used as a rough channel markers to make sure your plan is reasonably on target. Nobody spends exactly 4% each year. I retired at 43 and my spending has been very...

Re: How much cash to retire?

I agree 4% seems quite conservative these days when we've been on a 12 year bull run. I'm a fan of more of a glidepath where we spend a little less the first 5-10 years then if we have avoided the...

Re: The nitty gritty, Making money while you're cruising The South Pacific

Yep, I think it will if nothing else be a way too meet some fun people along the journey. Thankfully we won't need to do this in order to put food on the table though.

Re: Year 5 Costs of Cruising and Living On My Boat

Thanks Sailorboy1, I tend to agree. Boats of the same size with similar systems should have very close to identical out of pocket costs, but nice to hear your confirmation as someone who is...

Re: Year 5 Costs of Cruising and Living On My Boat

Sailorboy1, just curious if you would agree with the following statement. If you had say a 44' brand new Hallberg-Rassy fully kitted out the same as your boat for liveaboard cruising that had a...

Re: The nitty gritty, Making money while you're cruising The South Pacific

My wife can sing and play the acoustical guitar and has no problem doing a 2-3 hour set of all the songs that people love hearing in the tropical beach bar environments. For fun, she plans on...
