It could be a loose connection somewhere between the charger and the battery.
Check if all the nuts are still tight and feel if nothing along the line gets warm or hot !

This is even worse than what the canvas guy was referring to.
He mentioned that the underlying fabric would be damaged and lose it's shape because of the heat, not catch...

Are you using the orignal 220/110V charger through a convertor or did you use the 12V adaptor from Torqeedo ?
