Re: Rule 5 -- Is Single-Handing Illegal?

"You should not believe everything you read on the web" - yes, so where is the definitive answer D'head promised us, from USCG and UK MoT? Never happened - why not? All these singlehanded races going...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

So, give it then.

How do the different hull designs they have sailed compare in big seas?

At least TRY to stick to the subject.

How do they compare for comfort - in big seas?
How do they...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Wow! The knives are out. Condemn IOR rating rule and the boats it spawned, leading to less seaworthy, less sea-kindly, and definitely less stable designs, as many have done when they realised what...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Musta been hogwash when we were rolled by that wave after running under bare poles for 3 days. I musta dreamt it.

Re: Rain down the mast

I'd reword that to something like "people carefully tap and secure finely tapered wood wedges evenly around the entire mast, to support it uniformly and without damage." Or some sort of rubbery goo...

Re: Grounding , stringer - hull separation

In many areas, grounding is an almost daily fact of life. We keep the speed to a minimum though.

Yes a lot can be done to transfer the fore-and-aft keel loads beyond the ends of the stump...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Mate, you don't need our advice, you have an eye for this.

Those of us who appreciate the virtues of full-keel boats will love the deep centreline on this one - it makes a helluva...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

You wouldn't want a Perry Valiant 42 or 47??? Enlighten us, those of us who drool at the very thought... (Okay I get the encapsulated iron thing but hey, no boat is perfect.)

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Someone here will recognise her but Bob Perry is one of the finest yacht designers ever - I just checked on sailboatdata.com and of course he designed the Valiant 47 and the Tayana 47, two of the...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Lots of questions - glad to see folks finally paying attention to stability data - it is the most critical aspect of any boat, bar none, when the chips are down, but is often barely recognised when...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

AVS and STIX combined make up Cat A - Americans don't seem to want to recognise Cat A much so I guess they'd be even less enthused over STIX. Feel free to offer pearls of wisdom though - just don't...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Yea, you are.

Blood sweat and tears went into that standard, years of pushing and haggling. :banghead: Sure it's a minimum - falling below Cat A is about as low as a boat could get - but...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

More correct to say bigger boats will need bigger waves before stability becomes critical. In equivalent sea conditions, it doesn't matter if you are testing a tiny scale model or a super-tanker, the...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Cat A is not self-regulation - it is law in the EU. It took many, many years to negotiate (of course). Boat industry fought it all the way but it was pushed on by just a couple of guys who recognised...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Think about it - that's exactly the same as saying "they will not stay upright, but will take a little longer to invert." Longer to invert than a Cat A? Cat A is minimal, not as good as Cat A is...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Look again at the GZ curve published for the HR 57 cruiser then tell me it won't stay inverted. Size alone will (hopefully) keep that thing outa trouble, not its stability curve. Other similar...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

I just wanted to expand on this one point. Rolling heavily going downwind is an indicator of good high-angle stability. Modern downwind sleds are made more comfortable downwind, at least initially,...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Thanks Dale, Paul for pushing the other side of the argument - I'm kinda hoping for some consensus that might help the OP, so it's no good saying 'it all depends on which modern design', and 'nothing...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Briefly:
(1) Vessel safety depends on structural strength, as mentioned above. Try not to confuse these two issues.
(2) It's not what I think - it's the findings of the report into the '79 disaster...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

I don't believe any of the few full-keeled yachts out there ('79 Fastnet) got knocked down. It would take more than a force 10 to knock down any full-keeler I've sailed on. And arguing that one type...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Then you have never encountered waves out of proportion in steepness and size to your hull size. Read the Fastnet report for better insight.

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

??? If that's the case then any discussion of boat types and their relative behaviour is futile. Each type is loved by someone, but that shouldn't prevent discussion of the type, whether in broad...

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

Oops - my mistake, was thinking of those Volvo ocean racers; those modern sleds all look the same to me, you'd have to pay me to sail in one (and that's not gonna happen).

Re: Hull Shapes and Behaviour in Heavy Seas

It means any boat fully crewed by professionals will survive - but will they survive in comfort? Are they in constant danger of being swept overboard? Can the hullform survive the conditions without...
