Re: Leaving Air Conditioner running on when not at boat

Many boat air conditioners, including ours, have dehumidifier settings. We leave that on during the summer in Florida when we are back home in Md. I researched and found no issue with doing this. ...

Re: They're back - Rebel Heart

That image of the captain lounging around, while other captains were scurrying around getting their boats ready for sailing the Pacific, is so damning.

Re: Northbound ICW in a Time Crunch

I have done the ICW from Annapolis to Florida several times. On both a sailboat and a trawler. We found that the biggest problem to having any control over how long it took was the weather and the...

Re: State of Living Aboard in Florida

There is a supply/demand problem in Florida, especially mid to south eastern Florida. Marinas are disappearing. Don't buy a boat before finding a marina.

I hear that Marsh Harbour still has a security problem.

Re: Crew needed Chesapeake to Fla in January

We drive a trawler and taking the Cut was less "cluttered" and faster than the Swamp. Overall , I can't imagine traveling down the Ditch this time of year.

Re: Crew needed Chesapeake to Fla in January

Virginia Cut is the alternative to the Dismal Swamp. No biggie and faster. After doing ICW about 10 times, recommend the Cut.

Re: Common Objects to Defend Your Boat at Sea

As a woman and cruising with my husband, I appreciate the practical advice from Jdege. I do not want to be inhibited by thinking thoughts like, "Is this legal?" at the moment I confront someone...

Re: maintenance for trawler kept in slip

Thanks for the help everyone. We do have someone looking after the boat, starting it regularly, cleaning bottom and monitoring for problems. Also, we have hurricane plan. Wanted to educate myself....

Re: maintenance for trawler kept in slip

Thanks everyone for your very helpful suggestions. I do have someone checking the boat regularly, including starting it, cleaning the bottom, changing the Dry-Rid. We have a hurricane plan.

Re: maintenance for trawler kept in slip

Not very helpful.

I was talking about maintenance of large items like generators, air conditioning, etc. Need to put together a check list, especially since we're snowbirds and not there for 6...

maintenance for trawler kept in slip

We have an Albin 36 express trawler. We are keeping it in a slip in Florida year round. I am looking for a check sheet for maintenance. Does anyone have one or suggestions?

Re: Where are the sailboats?!

I agree that sailboats are much less popular than they used to be. Some of it is demographics with older people giving up on sailboats for trawlers or other motor cruisers. I hear this from marina...

Re: sandy hook to cape may but gail coming in

I'd head to Atlantic Highlands to get fuel and overnight. Having anchored at Sandy Hook in a gale, I wouldn't do it again.

Re: Girl Killed by 3 Sharks in Bahamas

I disagree. I think it's a very useful warning, which I have heard many times while I've been a boater.

Re: Florida- Dehumidifier or Moisture Absorber

We put our trawler on the hard a year ago and learned that the DampRid stuff can't keep up. Super-big mold problem that took us weeks to clean up.

There is no electricity on the hard where we...

Re: Crossing Gulf Stream Florida to Bahamas

I have 50 years of sailing experience in the Chesapeake, ICW, Maine, BVI and even Greece. Going over to the Bahamas can be a real eye opener. We waited 34 days one time and, even then, had to turn...

Re: Sexism In The Sailing Community

Wow, what an interesting observation. I heard the same thing recently from someone in about the same age range. Invisible. On a boat or in a yacht club.

Re: Adrift, the movie

I'm hard to please, but I thought "Adrift" was one of the better sea-going movies I've seen. I was not disappointed.

Re: From key west to isla mujeres

That can be quite a hummer of a trip to Isla Mujeras, especially when you round Cuba into the Yucatan Straights. We were too stupid and lacking in weather information in the 70s to plan any weather...

Re: Adrift, the movie

I saw the movie and liked it.....and I'm hard to please. I found the shifting time frames the only way to tell this story.

Re: We are about to buy a live aboard and navigate the icw. YIKES!

Paul:

The ICW is a pain for being shallow. There are places that we have to go through at high tide, because we have a 5 ft draft.

The other recommendation is, if you go aground hard and try...

Re: Advice on chartering on The Chesapeake

October can be a little undependable regarding weather, so I wouldn't roam too far from home base if you only have 4 to 5 days. We used to do fall cruises in October a lot, but found ourselves more...
