When i bought my boat in 2016 she came with 4 manual Harken winches. Two 44 Harkens for the halyards and furling and two 48 manual Harkens for the genoa sheets.

Since winches always rotate ...

Re: Seacock handle turns freely but valve doesn't close

it appears that the valve should be turning since the handle and nut are turning together on the shaft. This might have been a standard brass stopcock or an old DZR valve but what has happened is...

Re: Bavaria vs Jeanneau vs Beneteau

Bow-thruster, Solar, Windgen, watermaker, washing machine and 2-3,000W inverter would tick most boxes. Li batteries probably add too many complications. Could probably all fit in a boat 45-50ft. The...

Re: The cost of moorings

Harro,

Seems that the marine you hv chosen is one that could not care about yr length but only for the potentially largest stinkpot that would fit. You do not give the LOA of yr boat so hard to...

Re: Galvanizing -- how far to go

Hot Dip galv is a completely different layer of zinc than electroplating. In hot dip galv the zinc and steel combine together to make an intermetallic layer with increasing Zn % and less Fe% as you...

Re: New study quantifies what we already knew: 75% of fishing vessels don't use AIS

a certain size "must be FITED with AIS" but "fitted" is the important word. It does not oblige them to actually be transmitting on AIS.

If a fishing boat has its nets out i doubt it could avoid...

Re: Too many guests ! How do I deal?! What do I do!?

Some great ideas here but i guess we each have our own way of doing things. Much might depend on yr local power (solar?), comms, watermaker?, washing machine? I do not have the last 2 but have enough...

Re: Autopilot - Heading hold turns 20 degrees to port

I don't know yr solution but i often wonder why people bother with TRUE when few people use charts anymore, I certainly don't. All my charts are tucked away under one of the berths and have not seen...

Re: Why won't a Spade Bite

I have a 25kg Spade for my 13m(43ft) sailing boat. I started with a ,20kg Bruce, used a grinder to sharpen the point but had too much trouble in bays w weed so changed to 20kg Spade. That was good...

Re: Crossing from Menorca to Sardinia in May next year

Arnod,

Crossing from Palma (better angle to the wind if you cross from Mahon/Menorca) is not difficult as long as you watch out for the mistral which can be vicous, breaking waves, etc. Aim for...

Re: Rat on board!

I have had this problem twice while at anchor, about 100 metres (300ft) from the shore. Woke up in the morning to find droppings everywhere including near the anchor chain at the bow which is how i...

Re: My in-mast furling is a nightmare

I had no end of trouble with an old cross-cut dacron sail. Yes, it was baggy and 12 years old but little used. I go along with comments from NY Sail (#7) and Dockhead (#27) but make a few extra...

Re: How do you secure Code 0 furling line?

Re: Show of hands: who actually chartered boats before buying?

This is exactly what i did. I fancied the Jeanneau 45ds but chartered one for 3 weeks to see if i liked the model. Decided that the 43ds was a much better built boat, traditional stringers instead of...

Re: Spade anchor corrosion

Mark,
I think Spade add the yellow on the topside of their anchors so it is then v easy to see how far yr anchor has dug into the seabed if you dive over it. Personally, i like the idea. Makes it v...

Re: Not the keel I was expecting

Surely the bootstripe is not an accurate level to use. I usually choose a gently sloping , sandy seabed in a rising tide and see how far i can get towards the shore before the keel touches the sand....

On passage? Zero. If hopping from one island to another then OK after the anchor is down or at 6pm whichever is later.

Re: Anchoring in deep water on a slope

Sure, the best way would be to drop the anchor on the slope, back up to shore and set 1 or 2 shore lines. Very standard and very secure. Many times there is no such choice.

Am sure others have...

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

Noelex,

Access on my boat is fine. Prblm is that the impeller is partially hidden under the alternator and tucked away behind the starter motor. A nightmare!
