Re: Dewatering a small space

Amazon sells this very small and cheap 12V diaphragm pumps, with 1/4" hose in and out. One of these on a 12V timer would do.

Re: Why momentary switches on shower drains?

I have a Gulper, they are happy to run dry. Pusbutton switch that activates a bistable impulse relay. The relay is connected to a timer, which is set at 10 minutes. Just push the button, pump will...

Re: What's on your Arch or Stern?

No arch, nothing on my stern. The only thing going there is the mizzen sheet. Solar panels are on the Bimini covering the forward cockpit. RADAR antenna (not functioning, came with the boat) on the...

Re: PFD designed for a busty woman?

They tend to stock what sells, but you have definitely a point here.

Moving on was done on the 60s and 70s, since then it has been going slowly but steadily in the opposite direction.

Re: PFD designed for a busty woman?

I do not think an inflatable is good for kayaking. Once inflated it will make it all but impossible to get back in the kayak in case you end up in the water for some reason.

For kayaking, the...

Re: Going electric - change my mind

I do not have in mind to change your mind, but it should not be hard to sort out your MD7B, which is an excellent engine, albeit getting a little old, maybe.

Is yours salt water or fresh water...

Re: Dismasted at sea in the Bahamas, now what

I would at first get the mast onboard. It is not impossible with tackles, winches and a few beers.

If you are lucky, you might be able to sleeve the old mast instead of buying a new/used one.

Definitely no problem! If loose-footed, use a strap.

Re: Sailing Downwind Offshore - how to stop rolling ?

Easy, do not sail dead downwind. Depending on the boat, 20-30 degrees off DDW will result in a faster crossing, less rolling and a more pleasant sailing altogether. Of course, you will have to gybe...

Re: SpaceX launching 60 Starlink Sats Tomorrow!

Actually the descending Starlink satellite performed an avoidance maneuver, as can be seen from tracking info, and it looks as if there never was any risk of collision. Chinese misinformation. They...

Re: Help needed inverter and batteries

First step: Check that the shunt is correctly installed. On the negative side of the battery, with all power going through it and in the correct direction. There should be no other negative cable to...

Re: Full keel, fin keel, or no keel (lifting keel/centerboard) for heavy weather and

It does not really matter. I personally prefer centreboard boats, mainly because you can go to more places. A well designed full keel boat is easier on the crew, because they can heave to stable and...

Re: Companionway door - Threat of rollover

Hatch board in, hatch closed in any conditions that are risky. I do not lock the hatch, just hopes it stays in place.

Never been rolled, hope will never happen.

Re: Could you Make a sailboat completely watertight?

If you start motoring you need to open the air inlet, and then the lifeboat is not completely watertight anymore.

Re: Could you Make a sailboat completely watertight?

Boats tend to survive storms anyhow. The crew tends to be the problem.

Re: Negatives of full Fibreglass hulls/decks?

My boat is built with a solid hull and a solid deck and she is an ULDB. The cabintop is cored, though.

The hull has longitudinal stringers and the deck a fiberglass web instead of core. It is not...

Re: AGM to LiFePO4; can I replace my starting battery, as well?

I would not. For two reasons.

1) You would need a BMS that tolerates the amps during engine start. Expensive.
2) The batteries need to be big enough to handle the Amps. For example for the Eve...

Re: Freestanding mast opinions wanted

I sailed on a Freedom 40 many years ago. It was one of the earlier models with aluminium masts. I really enjoyed it. The boat was relatively fast, except when beating up, very easy on the rudder. BIG...

Re: Series or Parallel Panels?

Yes, that is correct, but in my case that makes little difference. The serial panel starts charging a few minutes earlier. But over the day the parallel wins. Consistently. I thought the opposite...

Parallel. I have two strings of panels. One with 2 Victron 115W panels in series. One with two 100W panels in parallel. The parallel string gives a consistent better daily output, even though the...

Re: Solo Ocean Crossing: 40 ft or 26 ft?

You have one of the best and most beautiful cruising boats in existence. A pity so few were made.

As for size, bigger is much more comfortable, and 40´is easy to sail single-handed. Even in an...

Re: Any Thoughts on the CPT Autopilot?

Mine works good. The only real drawback is on upwind legs, as it can not steer by the wind. I solve this by using another controller and the CPT drive at times.

The unit itself is more or less...
