Re: Vesper Marine AIS

I would ABSOLUTLY never buy anything from these guys. I heard they were good before they were bought by Garmin but I've had terrible issues.

I got an XB-8000 around 9? months ago, mainly because...

Re: Got the 2QM20 Black Oil Blues

My old boat had a 2QM20

My experience was the oil would turn black almost instantly even being in the vicinity of the engine! On the plus side it was absolutely bulletproof - I had all the coolant...

Re: Lewmar winch handles are different?

Thanks Ted

These winches are from the 80s, was the one touch system around then? How could I tell if the winch was designed to use them?

Lewmar winch handles are different?

I bought some self tailing 2 speed manual winches off a guy here on the forums for 970 dollars, but when they arrived they turned out to be massive electric winches without the gearbox.

The...

Re: Pair of 3 speed Lewmar 48 Self tailing winches

OK, these are not actually manual winches, but are the top half of electric winches so I wouldn't buy them unless you happen to have the gearbox etc parts lying around

Re: warning to buyers - scammers on the fourm

There is also at least one guy on here who aggressively haggles down prices, and then turns around and resells the item later on for more money to someone else. Not illegal, but kind of a dick move.

Pair of 3 speed Lewmar 48 Self tailing winches

600 bucks or best offer. Be warned, these things are huge and are in fairly rough shape, hence the low price. The drum is in good condition but they need to be taken apart and cleaned and the black...

Re: What's a Good 31-39 foot Cutter?

A early 80's Cherubini Designed Hunter 37C is an awesome boat. Heavily built, sails pretty well, cutter rigged and you can get them fairly cheap.

Easy to get to chainplates as well.

Re: 100 Footer or Not.. That is the question

Well I only lived in studio apartments, and in the UK they were about 250sq ft. My last apartment in Canada was actually 150sq ft, it had a Murphy bed that folded up into the wall!

Re: 100 Footer or Not.. That is the question

Genuine question, what does a 100'+ boat get you that a 50'/60' foot doesn't? The 50/60 footers already have more room in them than any apartment I've lived in, have dinghy garages, space for washing...

Re: Sell house, buy boat or vice versa?

I moved onto a boat, partially because I have no hope in hell of ever affording a house where I live. Born too late and with no family money.

Re: My Next Boat… Melges 24?

Yeah a melges is a super fun sport boat but you really need a crew to sail it properly, it's very dependant on meat ballast

Especially on a small lake, part of the fun of them is on a long...

Re: cruisersforum advertising taking up entire screen

Honestly I wouldn't have bothered but as mentioned the site was literally unusable with the full screen ads - nowhere to close them and even refreshing doesn't get rid of them

Re: boat line guide?

Using the low end dyneema core stuff (like MLX3) for your halyards and reef lines is very worth it.

I don't bother with sheets and just use the slight better double braid stuff (XLS)
