Re: Anchoring Technique with Old-Fashioned Anchors

If you are selling the Luke, I'd be interested in buying it as a storm anchor.

I've read the books and all the threads, and in my experience there is no substitute for a heavy anchor and all...

Re: Foul Head Odor

1. Replace the hoses.
2. Replace the tank vent.
3. The smell the neighboring boats have noticed did not come from the hoses. Even though you think your tanks are clean, they probably aren't. ...

Re: Forward Looking Sonar... Good to Have for Seeing Obstructions Ahead or Not?

I had it on my prior boat. Problem was, the screen was at the nav station below. It should have been at the helm.

Re: Hidden downside in beefing up new shrouds?

I'd consider one of the new ultrastrong fibers e.g. Dyna Dux or Vectran for your standing rigging. Light, never rusts. There's some stretching if it is not properly pre-stretched and annealed, but...

Re: Buying a daysailor to practice on for a year before making the switch to living a

It depends. You will learn to scrape and paint (if you've never done this before) and how to flake a sail. But that's about it. I owned a 16' daysailer for years before buying a cruising boat, and...

Re: Buying a daysailor to practice on for a year before making the switch to living a

No it isn't. So this is supposed to prepare him to live aboard? How? He ought to be learning how to bleed his diesel, not racing his daysailer.

We all raced dinghys and daysailers in our day. ...

Re: Buying a daysailor to practice on for a year before making the switch to living a

I would spend the $$ you would have spent on the daysailer and spend it on a good two-week offshore cruising course. It's like trying to learn how to drive a ten-wheeler by driving a Honda Civic. ...

Re: Cape May Canal local knowledge.

I bypassed Cape May and sailed across to Lewes, Delaware and stayed at the city dock for three days. Nice town, good restaurants, clean facilities. And of course its the home of Dogfish IPA.

Re: Centerboard Keels in Blue Water Vessels

I do know something about the Alden 44, because I know people who worked in the Tillotson Pearson yard when they were built and I've sailed on several, although I've never owned one. Beautiful...

Re: Centerboard Keels in Blue Water Vessels

My Bristol 38.8 is a centerboarder, as were all of them.

The boat will heel to 15 degrees pretty quickly. Then it stops. You have to be seriously overcanvassed to go beyond 20 degrees.

Having...

Re: Propane Tank Recertification

Propane tank recertification? I never heard of such a thing. Is it some sort of scam?

My boat had two 10 lb tanks that were old and unbelievably rusty. I replaced them last year, but no one...

Re: Boat recommendation wanted from experienced cruisers

You won't get a 38.8 (like mine) in your price range, but you night find a Bristol 35.5. I think you will find that the boat heels to 15 degrees pretty quickly, but stiffens up quite a bit after...

Re: Pacific Seacraft 37/40

IMHO the engine under the sink is a horrible design. The whole boat smells of diesel after awhile.

The PSC 37s and 40s are great boats in a seaway, but I find them small inside, given their...

All other things being equal, Catalina, hands down. I've never owned either one, but I know people who have.

Re: Tall guy/Looking for options<36ft

Look for boats designed by Ted Hood or Mark Ellis, both of whom were 6-4 themselves. In your price range, I would look at boats like the Nonsuch 33, Niagara 35 and Bristol 35.5 (although the...

Re: Westerbeke parts

Hansen Marine in Marblehead, MA is the place for Westerbeke parts. I needed a new water pump for my Westerbeke 46 (which is a Perkins 4-108 clone) and Hansen is the only place that had one in stock.

Re: Aft head, sub-35', tall guy, prospects

No, I was too focused on the "tall" part. Mark Ellis, who designed the Nonsuch boats (and also the Niagara 35), is 6-4, so they have plenty of headroom. The late Ted Hood was also 6-4, so you will...

Re: Fantasy Sailboat

My dream boat is an Allures 45. Low maintenance and a perfect layout for cruising, especially with the aft workroom/lazarette. Plus you can beach it or dry it out flat: draws less than 3 feet with...

Re: Need your advise.

Yes, without a budget, sensible advice is impossible.

Nothing wrong with a full keel for your purposes. You aren't racing. Nothing wrong with a ketch, either. But there's a huge gamut depending on...

Re: hobbyhorsing westsail 32

Heavy full-keelers tend to hobbyhorse in a chop. It's the nature of the beast.

Re: Used Charter Company Boats

Obviously some of these boats have been heavily used, and many of them have been chopped up to create a s many cabins and as many heads as possible.

But the real issue is the inherent quality...

Re: Is this boat worth the asking price?

Is it a ketch or a cutter? The cutter should probably go for a few thousand more. I like these boats. Very roomy for a 32 footer, well built. I almost bought one once.

But you won't win...

Re: Your Opinion - Best Dinghy?

1. Best is probably Avon, but they are no longer sold in the U.S.
2. I have a Walker Bay Odyssey 270 air floor (hypalon).

Pros: (1) it's very light and will deflate easily and store in a...

Re: Best Sail Makers

Another vote for Quantum, which makes a very good sail for the money. If you don't mind paying a bit more, there are several smaller shops here in the U.S. Northeast that will also make you a...
