Re: UV protection of DIY Dyneema rigging?
With an excess of first time paranoia, I speced a heat shrink cover on my first dux Dynex stays. And taped over exposed eyes. I no longer have the boat, but it’s about 20 years and going strong. ...

Re: Risk of capsizing a Lagoon 380 and reefing
Should you be surprised by big wind before you have reefed, depower by dropping the traveler, and easing sheets.
When the wind is up and gusty, be able to dump the sheets quickly. No winch...

Re: Do engine fires happen? Naturally aspirated, small diesels.
I had such a fire. A 25 hp Nanni/Kubota diesel. Black smoke billowing out, a small flame under the engine, easily knocked down with our fire extinguisher, but restarted. The battery disconnect...

Doubt factory data.
Recognize subjective opinions as just that, subjective.
Get a real weight in sailing trim, and real sail areas. This allows a rough comparison to other boats.
Out in SoCal I...

Re: Do I need to carry a drogue or a parachute anchor
Your question uses the word "need" which has a very subjective definition. I brought my 47 cat from Tortola to Ensenada thru the canal, and bought a Jordon drogue just to be safe. Never used it. ...

I switched to Dux Dynex on my last boat, was paranoid about UV & chafe, and had it covered with black heat shrink (by Precourt). No exposed Dux. Was going strong at 12 years. My current boat I...

Re: When--exactly--are cats faster?
In all fairness, this particular race had great wind, 15-22 TWS most of the race, only dying at the end. In 2020, the wind was much lighter, taking us an extra 6 hours to finish, and having 15 monos...

Re: When--exactly--are cats faster?
First I misspoke a bit, my boat is a Schionning GF 1400, so closer to 46' long. As for faster monohulls, in this year's Newport to Ensenada race, about 120 nm, mostly downwind, over 100 boats, I...

Cats are not inherently faster than monos. But my 47’ Schionning cat is a lot faster than your Amel and the Lagoon, on all points of sail. Key performance factors are weight, sail area, and...

Are you sure about this? On the Galvanic series Zinc is less noble than Aluminum.

“Cheap” is a subjective term that is in the eye of the spender. If you’d like to discuss in the context of these engines, let’s take it offline. I’m bill@gibbsvineyards.com.
