Re: Perkins returns black fuel
After a while Away From Boat and then other projects, I am back at the engine issue. For those that didn't read the whole thing: My 37ft sailboats Perkins 4108 returned black fuel. Since then, I... |

Re: Perkins 4.108 erratic rpm's
The simplest way to check if it's the 'Alternator Syndrome' would be to discharge your batteries quite a bit (running high loads such as radar, fridge, music, TV via inverter and such with the engine... |

Re: Perkins 4.108 erratic rpm's
Hey Paddy! Think about the whole suction side fuel system - it can be basically anything. Some boats have sludge on the bottom of their tanks which will sometimes clog the lower end of the... |

Re: Perkins 4.108 erratic rpm's
I have a Gulfstar with a 4.108 too. Just some random thoughts to begin with: 1) could be the beginning of an air leak or a clogged fuel filter - if the occassional rpm rise intensifies, and... |

Re: Shareholder model
Please, lord, no! Don't make me do that. I remember an 80s movie called "Der Skipper" with a german dude taking on two ladies who end up killing him and themselves. I've been on a (my) boat with... |

Re: Shareholder model
I will. Thank you! I think the potential interpersonal difficulties are still the main problem. I will ask around my friends and aquaintances first. We'll see. |

Re: Shareholder model
that'd be me... That'd also be me... I agree, but I think you can limit this effect by people actually working on the boat and traveling on it for extended periods of time. To sort of... |

Re: Shareholder model
I think that a lot of boat owners came to sailing in rather classic ways and can not imagine sharing their boats. Many, if not most cruisers are simply not very familiar with this way of thinking,... |

Re: Shareholder model
Sure, if you want to put it this way. It really has nothing to do with the usual bareboat- or crewed charters on the market regarding the involved payments or timeframes. The fact remains that people... |

Re: Shareholder model
Besides questions of good seaman- and friendship, if I'd make them sign a waiver to not being held accountable financially, and have them particularly sign that this is NOT a charter but a shared... |

Re: Shareholder model
Although I now know every screw on my boat, it is unfortunately a couple's boat, with a v-berth and a main salon and that's it. It's perfect for a cruising couple, and it's a good, seaworthy tank... |

Re: Shareholder model
Exactly. It's NOT fractional ownership. Maybe I used the wrong words in the first place. It's basically buying into a group trip model, or being able to "live the dream" without having to buy your... |

Re: Shareholder model
As said, the benefits are that you gain access to a world cruising boat for 2-3 years for the price of a 3-4 week charter. Also, you wouldn't have the liabilities and hassles of boat ownership. You... |

Re: Shareholder model
Absolutely. I bought my boat on the lower end of the scale and put probably 3-4 times the purchase price in it. And it took 3-4 times as long. But as I assumed on the other thread, with 4... |

Shareholder model
Triggered by another thread here that took an... unpleasant turn (probably a scammer), I thought about different models for people in their 30ies with somewhat limited funds that want to drop it all... |

Welp... has been too early for math I guess, here at UTC+1. It's $40.000, not $400.000 of course. |

Re: Florida Crew/Owners Wanted!
If you have over-budgeted anyway, why not go one step further and buy a bigger boat? Something 50-60' ? If you gather 10 determined people who put 2k a month in your project for 2 months and work... |

I knew a bunch of people who did the same thing once in Europe. It lasted 10 weeks. Then they got into petty arguments that towered up to a huge cluster*beep* of hostility and accusations. Who's... |

Re: Perkins returns black fuel
It's not turning too many rpm, I am actively revving it up to say 2800. I can't get over 3200 in gear though. I understand that a bigger prop or a different pitch would not allow the engine to rev up... |

Re: Perkins returns black fuel
Both transmission and prop have not been altered since I have the boat. She did 5 - 6 knots two years ago @ ~2000 rpm going against wind and sea. I can turn the shaft freely with one hand while... |

Re: Perkins returns black fuel
Also, another question, engine related. Let's assume the bottom is clean, a 37ft not overly loaded down cruising boat, with a clean, 3-blade prop with the correct pitch. If I want to go hull... |

Re: Perkins returns black fuel
I ran the engine with the new raw water pump out of a 5gallon jug. So far so nice, all worked well, but for some reason it decided to start smoking / fuming / vaporing out of the mixing elbow /... |

Re: Perkins 4-108
I think this is a little too hot. Mine stays at 170°F even when running 2100 for hours. 180°F would be acceptable. Above? Not so much. But there is so many things to consider - first would be to... |
