Mine is still working great n not leaking. Thanks to all the help and trying to find cheap n simple solutions. Now working on a bigger 200hp Volvo Penta tamd41p-a in a new fishing boat.

Jim, the masthead light I am referring to is the light on top of my mast that has red, green, and white lights but is visible broken as seen from deck. From posts received I think I will be fine...

I bet my Grandfather in Norway used one of these on his MFV 50'. I bet it would work. Light at dusk and bring down in dawn.

Have someone move the throttle from slow to fast and look where the linkage is attached to the pump and you will have it. Are you sure it is leaking? May have a pic somewhere if you still need it.

If I had to do it again I would pull the shafts out and go to an auto parts store to get orings to match the ones taken out. I would also need some washers for the 2 bolts if the existing ones were...

Installed new glow plugs yesterday and it starts great now. I got Durite 0-130-12 glow plugs for about $17 each, like $85 for 4 including shipping from England at a place called the toolboxshop.com...

On the head bolt wrench, will have to check clearance under there, may only be able to torque the head when the motor is out of the boat.

Hydraulic would be nice, my 86 VW diesel had mechanical and my 91 had hydraulic. It is running good now except for cold starts, so I am going sailing in 75 degree F and about 10mph wind.

I remember the old VW air cooled needed to be adjusted every 15k miles too or they would burn the #3 exhaust valve. I will check on re torqueing the head and adjusting the valves soon. But will...

Previous owner had engine rebuilt probable less than 100 hours ago. Runs so good after starting. But wonder about torqueing the head and adjusting the valves sometime soon. But it's 72 degrees...

Yes, the black smoke stops soon after the engine is running on it's own. It runs great when warmed up. I suspect the cylinders without a hot glow plug build up fuel and then when the rpms pick up...

Thanks for the info. This is an older one, a 1971 that I think is a Perkins. Like a 4-108 but smaller bore. I found some at WM for around $34, a Sierra 23-1000. But I see glow plugs for less that...

John, That is great you got your shaft sealed. I went ahead and put an o ring on the fuel shut off shaft too since it was apart. My seal on the throttle shaft was definitely worn and brittle but...
