Fort Lauderdale and Keys- where to go for a newbie with a trailer-sailer?

We're getting close to buying our first sailboat. We've recently moved near Fort Lauderdale and looking into a 19' trailerable sailboat (West wight potter 19).

I've been scouring marine charts...

Re: Fort Lauderdale/Miami info- where to sail a small boat?

Thanks for the advice. Do you leave your boat in a wet slip or pull it out after using?

Dinner key rates show $19/ft and it looks like there's a 30' minimum? That's $570 a month to keep a boat...

Fort Lauderdale/Miami info- where to sail a small boat?

We've decided to jump into sailing with a small day sailor like a Catalina 22. We recently moved to Fort Lauderdale area and I have no idea (other than looking at charts) where there are good places...

Re: What size/type first our first sailboat- 2 adults/2 kids sailing in Miami/Keys

I'm a retired helicopter pilot so I know flying and navigation. I grew up on power boats and even did a stint not flying in the Navy and got my OOD (Officer of the Deck) qualification on a 42,000...

Re: What size/type first our first sailboat- 2 adults/2 kids sailing in Miami/Keys

Great advice so far, keep it coming!

I'm more inclined to step down in price on a boat that we could pay cash for and not take on debt (learned my lessons on that before). I could spend $10k...

Re: What size/type first our first sailboat- 2 adults/2 kids sailing in Miami/Keys

Thanks for the inputs. The only reason I'm talking about sailing without my wife is during the summers. She works full time, but with the boys out of school, that's a lot of day sailing we can be...

Beautiful boat, but I doubt it will be for sale in June/July. Do you think a 38 footer can be handled with just me and 2 kids? I'm thinking docking could be a challenge.

What size/type first our first sailboat- 2 adults/2 kids sailing in Miami/Keys

Hello,

We moved down to Fort Lauderdale and plan to stay 3-4 years (we're a military family). We're looking to get our first sailboat this summer. We should be able to take advantage of a...

Re: First trailerable sailboat? Have 2 small kids.

Hey all, I'm back. I had gotten all excited for a small sailboat and drove 4 hours away to check out a "cherry" 80's era Catalina 22. It turns out that all the work done on the boat was actually...

Re: First trailerable sailboat? Have 2 small kids.

The Catalina 22 looks like a winner. My wife likes it. We can rent one in Annapolis for a day to try it out before shopping. I found a nice '82 on craigslist with trailer, modern motor, and new...

First trailerable sailboat? Have 2 small kids.

I know this is a cruising forum, but I'm already a member, so here it goes:

I sold the power boat and my wife has the itch for sailing. We've both taken the military's 3 day beginner sailing...

Re: Thinking about a cruiser for weekends & ICW...

Haven't done anything yet. Still have the Grady White, and were going to sell it in the spring. We have a second home to sell this summer before we can jump into a cruiser, so we have plenty of...

Re: Thinking about a cruiser for weekends & ICW...

If we do PCS, it would most likely be Norfolk, VA or San Diego, CA. Norfolk would be even better boating. Not so sure about San Diego- big waves outside the harbor...

Hello! I'm a new member, hope this is the right forum for me. Currently we have a 22' Grady white and do short day trips on the Potomac River around DC and MD.

I'm quickly realizing that my...
