Re: Housekeeping contribution cruising in Japan

Thank you all for the advice - all good. I guess I was hoping someone might have an idea of cost of living as a yachtie resupplying in Japan. I'm sure we'll get through fine. Thanks again.

Re: Housekeeping contribution cruising in Japan

It's been a few years since we have sailed together but it goes without saying that when we are aboard we are crew. I still think we need to contribute ..............

We'll likely be doing that anyway, but thanks - that's a start!

Housekeeping contribution cruising in Japan

We are lucky bunnies to be invited to spend a couple of weeks cruising Japan's Inland Sea in March/April aboard a mate's Salar 40. Can anyone please suggest a reasonable contribution to the boat for...

Re: water pump bearings, $30 ones or $4 ones?

A good trick I have learned with "sealed" bearings is that when they get dry and rumbly you just pick out the plastic cover and repack them. So simple. Naturally if they are loose and worn...

Re: My Honda is sick .

We had a similar problem with our BF8 but found it would run sweeter with the choke out. The Honda dealer who had done the big service previously said it likely needed a carbie clean. Having left...

Re: Please help. Passage info, Darwin to Perth Australia

Don't forget the Montebellos, off Onslow, S of Port Hedland. Relics and awesomeness of the Brits' 1940s/50s atomic tests and wonderful fishing. Always some shelter.

Re: Leak in cabin fixable, but worried about deck damage

Ethylene glycol (traditional antifreeze) is a brilliant anti-fungus. It will chase the water, mix with it and kill spores.

Re: Goodbye Med - hello Melbourne Australia....

Check out the Gippsland Lakes. Plenty of "affordable" moorings, lovely sailing, great facilities. Easy drive from Mel for the weekend. More fun than PFB

Re: Batteries putting off hydrogen

They only give off gas when boiling. My battery supplier says my silver calcium "deep cycle" wet battery needs to boil briefly at the end of each charge, which it does @ 15 .3 V for a minute or so...

Re: Bungee jump it spend the night in the ocean

Once went for a swim in the deep blue. The weirdest feeling. Almost vertigo. I'm not a great swimmer and very quickly the boat started looking much smaller than it should. I probably won't do it...

Re: What's that crackling sound I hear at night under the boat?

I was always led to believe it was barnacles.

Re: Best screws for fiberglass

To stop water penetration one should really treat it similarly to a through hull fitting - overdrill, fill (eg epoxy), pilot.

Re: Duck tape on deck

Kerosine (paraffin, UK) WD40 or mineral turps. I now avoid acetone for the health problems - actually pulls me "down" - and the fact that is such a good transporter of evil stuff into the skin. It...

Re: Do I have an oddball tiller motor???

That motor sounds just like ours, right down to the date and prop. Sends our 23' trailer sailer very nicely. Long shaft quite necessary in sloppy chop which would otherwise have the prop out the...

Re: Can resin displace water in chipboard?

If you can soak the area in ethylene glycol ( common antifreeze, 100%) it will likely penetrate the damp area and is a superb anti fungal. I have used this method on my boat and my wife's fungal toe...

Re: Glue for teak, interior cabinetry

Personally I do not like the look or feel of varnished teak. It is such a lovely, durable, easy to manage oiled finish. I despise polyurethane as it looks and feels like plastic on "furniture" and...

Re: Cork cabin sole. contact cement to fiberglass?

My experience with liquid nails is disappointing. It continues to harden and eventually becomes brittle and fails. Definitely avoid in the Tropics.
