Re: Navionics... Argh....

Navionics charts were very poor in a couple of locations in northern Queensland. The entrance to 1770 was completely wrong, you went through the headland to enter. For nearby Lady Musgrave Island, if...

Re: Boat naming ideas

First, make it easy to spell, as when you have to communicate with coast guard/marine rescue/marinas, a name that is impossible to spell will soon get you and them frustrated.

Also make it as...

Re: Stern/rail mounted AIS receiver-only antenna?

Are you talking about AIS antenna or GPS antenna? AIS antenna needs to be as high as possible to get the most out of it. GPS antenna just needs "clear view" of the sky. I believe the OP is not...

Re: Running engine at anchor for hot water - load

Had 3YM30s in my cat. No problem, just don't do it for heaps of hours.

Re: Down Under, Inside or Out? Choose wisely

Thought from your title that you were going to ask about whether it is best to travel inside Fraser Island or outside, or perhaps inside from The Seaway to North Moreton Island.

Down Under is how...

Re: Kiwi yacht mayday off Fiji

Not sure if I am watching the same video as others, but it is clear that the top of the mast has broken off and is hanging by the rigging. Same video in both links. Presumably the mast has hit one of...

Re: Laser Rangefinder Anyone use for anchoring?

Golf rangefinders are cheap and very accurate. I had one when I had my yacht, was great figuring out if a boat was too close to us or we were too close to the shore. Sometimes we were amazed at the...

Re: Britomart, Bramble, Trunk reefs Queensland

I have been to John Brewer and Back Numbers in 2015. Back Numbers was better, too deep anchoring at John Brewer.

In 2017 we went to Back Numbers, then Kelso then Trunk Reef. These two were very...

Re: Heading south on the East Coast of Australia. Questions.

In my two trips to FNQ, we headed back from Townsville (to Sydney) in the first week of September. Had winds behind us for most of the time.

Bumfuzzle Circumnavigation Number 2

Well, many, many years after their first circumnavigation of the world, Bumfuzzle headed off from Puerto Valeta 6 days ago. Pat, Ali, Ouest and Lowe are sailing their 2015 Nautitech 40′ catamaran and...

Re: Max Prop Whisper only forward thrust available

My guess would be that there is growth on the prop stopping it moving into reverse operation. Had it happen to my Max Prop.

Re: DSC radio with incorrect MMSI

You should be able to acknowledge the lack of GPS on the radio and it will no longer alarm. This is how mine works. Easiest thing is to leave the GPS on too.

Re: Boat drifting in Marshall islands

Very sad, but that is one of the most remote parts of the North Pacific Ocean. Nearest land is hundreds of nautical miles away and the countries are some of the poorest in the world, so no maritime...

Re: Sailing from Townsville to Sydney

20 hp is not much for a cat that size crossing the bars. We had 2 x 29 hp and often had them flat out crossing NSW bars.

Re: Sailing from Townsville to Sydney

Have a look at my website and the two voyages I did to Queensland from Sydney. They have full details of sailing back, albeit not at the time of the year you plan to do it. Michael McFadyen's Scuba...

Re: Micronesia

Boats go from the main wharf area to all the islands inside and outside the lagoon as far as I recall from my six trips there. I doubt you will get a sailing boat passing by, I never saw one.

Re: On passage, what speed do you decide to turn on an engine?

When sailing in New South Wales, you generally need to average a certain speed to get from one port to another (most are good distances apart) before dark or to catch the tide as you are crossing a...
