Re: Recommended Brands of power tools
we've had good experience with just the Ryobis. they're available in the US at Home Depot. relatively cheap. they offer a 12V "car" charger, useful if your boat is primarily 12V. the wet-n-dry... |

Re: Link 2000 and Freedom 20 problems
They're old units, and have lived in a marine environment. When I replaced mine, I went with a Magnum Energy inverter/charger/remote display/controller. It's essentially a bolt-in replacement for... |

Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker
Target sells a good one. It's got a grinder with a ceramic bur, stainless steel metal parts, and a snap-on cap. Fill with coarse salt. |

Re: 400FT Chain, 50FT Water Windlass BREAKS, what now?
as so many have said, use the genoa winches. It will scar your deck. We had a vertical capstan winch (Maxwell). Changed it to a Lofrans Tigress, for so many reasons. A lot of work, but worth it. |

Re: Do you leave your windlass on?
because the windlass, switches and wires are usually in such a damp environment, and when anchored the chain (galvanized) runs down into the water. and because I've seen the galvanizing on the chain... |

Re: Do you leave your windlass on?
off. straycurrent can strip the galvanizing off the chain and anchor pretty quickly. and in a damp chainlocker, stray current is not unlikely. |

Re: Spectra 150 clark pump
I took the electronics off our Spectra 200T. Just not reliable. Converted to manual, I did keep the Z-ion unit. Added a second pressure gauge, upstream of the prefilters, so I know pressure drop... |

Re: Non-firearm weapons on board.
at least traditionally, firearms are allowable on a vessel if kept in a locked place, and only the ship's master has control over the key. we were allowed to keep our .22 revolver in this manner,... |

Re: How to fix these buried chainplates?
IMHO, the most suspect area for potential failure is where the chainplates come through the deck. Here they're oxygen-deprived, potentially wet with salt water, and subject to fatigue from the... |

Re: best galley you've seen on a midsize cruiser
Hylas 46. We have the version with a walk-thru on both port and starboard, to and from the aft cabin. Safe at sea, lots (relatively) of counter space. |

Re: Best way to preserve open cans of paint on board?
Two-part polyurethane paints seem much more able to withstand extended storage in a partially-used can. I've learned to like 'em. |

AB RIB, bottom protection strip replacement
We have a 9.5 ft. AB RIB, with factory painted aluminum hull. It's had a lot of use, not all gentle, and the plastic abrasion resisting strip on the outside of the bottom is looking pretty rough. ... |

Re: Freshwater pump keeps turning on every couple minutes
As far as I know, most water tanks are unpressurized, it's a suction line from the tank to the pump, and then maybe an accumulator tank (about 1 gallon) on the pressure side. If the main tank was... |

Re: ball valve on waterlock muffler. Good idea?
I'd think you want to get one that's minimally subject to corrosion. It's a tough environment. |
