Re: Biggest Solar Panels...

Whoa there - I’m not the one asserting anything. I asked our Jedi warrior for the evidence to back up his assertion that series is just better, full stop. That is not what I have come to understand i...

Re: Biggest Solar Panels...

Afraid the diagram is not legible on my phone. But my point is, I am not claiming anything - i confess here I know nothing except what I have been able to find online in doing my own installation...

Re: Biggest Solar Panels...

I think that is only partially true - the diodes improve things and prevent total loss of output, but the amperage of the whole array will be still be dragged down to that of the lowest yielding...

Re: Biggest Solar Panels...

But that’s because virtually all are expected to be placed in situations where overshadowing is not an issue. That is very much not the case on a yacht, which is why series is undoubtedly best when...

Re: Biggest Solar Panels...

Given your explanation is the exact opposite of what all other sources I have found say, and my personal experience, but is obviously very attractive if true, can you point us to an authoritative...

Re: Climbing rope for traveller control line

This thread is really interesting (hello btw. - I don’t post very often because the levels of knowledge on here can be a bit intimidating, but I’ll stick my neck out this time).

I had never...

Re: Run 1 or 2 engines?

Likewise - if (as I generally do) set 1850 as cruising revs on our Yanmar 4jh3 te (75hp) it stays at that revs and the speed varies according to the conditions - optimally about 6.5kts but sometimes...

Can’t say we feel short changed on the swim platform front…. (Sister ship)

Re: The Office in Morocco

I have been assured that it will be open by July, and have received from them a price and a confirmation of a berth for this coming winter. Also that lift out will be available, but uncertainty what...

Re: Your Backstory......expectations vs reality

Thanks for that (assuming you are replying to mine as can't find any other 21 May departures!).

We hope to to do a circumnavigation. That has been the plan for three years. But as d-day loomed, it...

Re: Your Backstory......expectations vs reality

Our adventure begins later today - Sunday 21st May - when we move aboard and begin a journey. It will be a little longer before I can report where that journey leads us.

Re: Ethics of protecting your vessel at anchor.

I think you are entirely blameless. But in this nasty litigious world I would think carefully about what you say to the owner - the law and justice are not synonymous.

Re: What To Do When There's Only Zephyrs?

Not sure what you mean by 'best not to use the engine' Ann. If the engine is usable and I want to get somewhere (that might mean just the pub), or I get bored, I'll use the engine. If not I'll sail,...

Re: Electric motor options for inflatable dinghy

1003s from 2013. No corrosion issues so far, despite total neglect - no freshwater rinse off, no contact spray, in four years. For us it makes total sense so long as we carry a spare battery. My main...

Re: Electric motor options for inflatable dinghy

We've had a Torqueedo for four years now and, cost aside, can't really fault it. Decided to buy a second battery and take it, rather than the petrol Yamaha ob, when we set off long term cruising in a...

Re: Croatia

I don't think it is negative, just realistic. Most cruisers seem to be on a considerably tighter budget than holidaymakers, whether land or water-borne. People tend to splurge on their one or two...

Re: Month 7 Expenses & Costs of Cruising

This seems like sage advice. Personality type and state of mind are so important. We cast off on 22 May. During the several year dreaming stage we imagined that would be the beginning of a multi-year...

Re: Alcohol consumption whilst at anchor

OK, OK, I'm not talking about steaming paralytic drunk here, which is clearly not a good idea for so many reasons. But two drinks? Or 3? Way too low imo. My point is that the risks arising from...

Re: Alcohol consumption whilst at anchor

No, I don't get it. Sorry to sadden you Brian, but you can help yourself there by trying to be a bit less judgemental. Of course I am not saying it is OK to get pissed in all circumstances - your...

Re: Alcohol consumption whilst at anchor

I just don't get the drink thing. I just can't imagine what sort of state you must have to be in to be unable to do pretty much anything sailyboat related. OK if a severe storm is due or something....

Re: Kayak - Ins' and Outs

We have a decent swim platform which obviously makes things easier, but our new inflatable kayak (Sevylor Ottawa - only kayak of any kind we've ever tried) is remarkably stable - I am 220lbs and can...

Re: Backstay adjuster on a masthead rig

Peters wet - I think that is probably right. My boat came with one. Not sure if I would pay to have one installed - maybe as part of a rerig. Though I do notice a significant effect on the forestay....

Re: Backstay adjuster on a masthead rig

Nice to have for me -we are resolute cruisers but on a passage it's nice to play - this winter I am having the out haul (currently at the mast) and reef 1 (single line to the cockpit) swapped over so...
