Re: AIS question for the experienced

Commercial vessels are accustomed to being called by their Lat Lon position as much as by their vessels name. If you have radar overlay or a plotting radar it's no big thing to get their position.

Re: Engine bed: Fix mounts to aluminum bar - will it work?

I can't comment on your experience but zinc, aluminum and mild steel are all very close together on the galvanic table, with stainless being more than four times as noble as the others. Other than...

Re: Engine bed: Fix mounts to aluminum bar - will it work?

I did similar and the aluminum works fine just don't use stainless fasteners, I used galvanized and no problem.

Re: Want to go Privateering?

It's more like pedophilia mixed with bestiality and a side order of stupidity. I know this is hard to believe but they're even worse than FOX, neither is worth the urine it would take to drown them...

Re: Want to go Privateering?

Labeling FOX as entertainment is sort of like labeling pedophilia the same way. FOX is a disgrace to the idea of truth or intelligent discourse.

Re: advice on exhaust installation

Vetus exhaust hose is softer and easier to snake into a difficult run than Shields or some others, if you have that particular issue. T clamps or non perforated worm drive clamps are best, I would...

Re: Another 'Bluewater Boat' Poll to Really Tee You Off!!

Most of my professional career was offshore before I ever bought my own boat so I'm not qualified adequately to respond, but I did anyway.

Re: glasses. best solution. how old too old to be a charter captain?

If you're looking to get a license seeing isn't that big a deal, for me it was color vision. After 30 some years with a masters license (1600gt oceans) I couldn't pass the color vision tests so now...

Re: Shot Across The Bow

I recently bought a 1974 Pearson 33 with a Universal M25XPB in it that the trans had failed in. I paid very little for it and will have it repaired by spring. I've been all through it and it...

Re: Best diesel for sailboats?

The same issue exists with Yanmar as they use Kanzaki marine transmissions which no one else uses and are thus unique to Yanmar.

Re: Best diesel for sailboats?

You can still buy a Bukh marine diesel in the sizes discussed here otherwise everything is converted industrial engines. I do have a Lister Blackstone SL2M that comes close but it's still a...

Re: Best diesel for sailboats?

That's true with many marinizing parts like seawater pumps, alternators, transmissions, drive plates and some exhaust parts, that's why it isn't all that hard to marinize an engine yourself.

Re: Best diesel for sailboats?

I have a Bukh DV20 which is a nice engine but is possibly the most expensive and difficult to get parts for of any brand. Nanni is predominately Kubota especially in the smaller hp range.

Re: Best diesel for sailboats?

Unfortunately there is no real small marine diesels built any longer so we're stuck with adapted industrial ones. Of the current engines available Kubota is the most easily and cheaply adapted....

Re: Easy boat to dock

I ran that one year for the NYDEC about thirty years ago, just curious if it was still around. I don't get back there often, I was born in Rochester and have a lot of family there.

Re: Easy boat to dock

That's true, it takes longer for external forces to accelerate the boat but that same dynamic comes into play when you apply power to maneuver. It's sort of relative, you may get into trouble more...

Re: Easy boat to dock

Not entirely true, to begin with as tonnage increases response time does also thus the need to anticipate becomes more important. Also the contention that tonnage and windage scale up is somewhat...

Re: Easy boat to dock

Some boats are relatively easy and some quite difficult but ultimately it's your skill in handling the boat that matters. You have one advantage in that you assumedly intend to primarily operate one...

Re: Anchor Size

The vessels total tons (in long tons) times 6.8 for a decent estimate of weight for a working anchor. If you want a simple discussion of the qualities of various types of anchors you're asking for...
