Re: 42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

Many sailors have circumnavigated on Hylas yachts. They have 40-46 foot versions, some are available for <150K but they are early 90s. I have a Hylas 54 and find their builds are really really solid.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

You can't go wrong by buying a Hylas. We spent a few years looking at similar boats, bought a H54 2003 and absolutely LOVE it. The boats are really well made, will last forever (if you take care of...

Re: Mac vs. PC

I run windows and Mac on my Mac book pro. So you can get both with one laptop. I’ve had both and find Macs to be more reliable.

Re: SMELL is killing me! What to do?

We had a similar problem. The source was the old head hoses and a bilge diesel spill long in the past. Both were dealt with but we could never get the smell out of the cushions or any other cloth...

Re: Well, you let me in here.

Welcome fellow sailor!

I had a Catalina 22 that I think fits your bill. I stored it by my house, on a trailer and sailed it in Lake Erie for 6 summers. I found a cheap (dumpy facilities but safe...

Re: Time for new sails

Peter Grimm of Doyle lofts in Ft Lauderdale is making our new sails and so far I couldn’t be more impressed with his service. He’s super knowledgeable (he was sailmaker of record on a Volvo race and...

Re: River body from Great Lakes to Mississippi River.

Ship the mast from Chicago to the gulf then restep it there. Done that before on the Erie Canal. Having the mast for 30 days on cradles makes boating very uncomfortable and the mast is longer than...

MacOS is the answer.

I run one of the biggest cloud computing providers in the country. Been running tech companies for 30 years, since the days of DOS. But what geeks like me have to remember is...

Re: Amel, Hylas or Oyster

I went through a similar analysis and comparison in 2012. I also looked at Moody's. In the end we fell in love with Hylas. I don't you can go wrong with any of your choices so in the end we went for...

On my system, I don't need to connect to the Internet. You turn on the chartplotter and it is a wifi router. Turn on your iphone or ipad and go to the wifi settings and you'll see a raymarine wifi...

Re: Handling a 45+ foot boat

Your broker is wrong. My wife and I went from a Catalina 22 to a Hylas 54. Yes we had chartered a few 45s and I've raced boats as long as 70' But I never had experience driving and docking such a...

Re: Want to Buy 44' to 48' bluewate cutter rigged monohull

My wife and I are big fans of our Hylas. We have a 2003 54 but you can get a 44-47 mid 1990s for your price range. They are incredible yachts and can meet all of your requirements, though you may...

Re: AIS on Great Lake

We sail 2000 mm a summer and use the AIS a lot when in the rivers or near shipping channels. It's useful to know there is a 600' freighter around the next bend on the st Claire river. Grays reef is...

Re: Sailing around the world with a Hanse 575, Amel 55 or Moody 54DS?

After tons of similar research and in a similar situation my wife and I bought a Hylas 54 in Newport, RI. We LOVE her. While it worked out great for us, I wish I had checked with these guys.

Re: New Sails for Hylas 54 - a maze of chioces!

I suggest you also consult hylasyachts.org which is an online community of Hylas owners. We also have an H54 (#28) here in the Great Lakes and will be shopping for new sails in 2 years when we head...

Re: Feedback from someone who has done NYC to Detroit

I think it took about 8 days to get through the locks from Albany to Otswego. It would have been another day or two to Buffalo I think. There are two challenges with doing just the weekends, I think....

Re: MFD in the Nav station and ipad at the helm?

Yes I get the same UI on the ipad as on the MFD. It's not terrible but I just find the iPad, with pretty much any of the apps available, much easier.

I do some UI design work and in this case I...

Re: MFD in the Nav station and ipad at the helm?

We have the Raymarine MFD at the helm. I find the wifi and RM app not very useful. It's confusing: there are 3 apps you use not one; there is latency between the two and the UI isn't that intuitive....

Re: Center Cockpits

I've owned both. Here's what I've seen with our Hylas 54, a CC:
1) you are closer to the bow so for longer boats you have better visibility and can communicate with crew on the bow
2) you won't be...
