Re: Is BGAN the cheapest for Sat Internet?

Don't know the answer to your question, but I'm not investing in anything extra (the Iridium Go is well priced and gets the job done), but once Musk's starlink is up in the next 1-2 years, I may very...

Re: US Import of South African Cat

Yup. South African boat imports into US are duty free under AGOA for a couple more years (unless renewed again). An agent will charge about $1500 flat for paperwork and bond.

Re: Forward cockpit Schionning Design!

Hah well you’ve seen her before I have ;) I don’t think builders are checking email cause it’s been silence for 5 days. Maybe I should recruit some spies (or eventually give in and call them).

Re: Calculating power requirements for catamaran.

A > 20:1 beam to hull ratio? That would indeed be something, tho I can't imagine it would have any usable load capacity. We have 2x40HP being put on a ~10T light displacement 52' 13:1 hull. That's...

Re: How many cats have flipped ?

52' 11.5T loaded cat 130sqm of sail nearly 13:1 B/L, from multihulldynamics, 21.8kn and 36.7kn. The condo cats are a bit better, but not by much, from the ones I remember looking at.

I post updates here:

The last one was 2 weeks ago, and I've been eagerly awaiting an update from builder the last 2 days. We've slipped the dates...

Re: Lithium battery C-rate question

You’ve probably already been in contact with oceanvolt but if you go with a custom battery you’ll lose some of their charge control automation that prevents over charging the batteries. I don’t...

Re: Bali 4.8 vs Leopard 50

I talked to a FL customs agent just a few weeks ago, about importing a custom SA boat, and he said very clearly that it's duty free and that they file a few of these a week with customs. This duty...

Re: US Import of South African Cat

For anyone else that reads this, it is a duty free import under AGOA, so that's a pleasant surprise. I talked to a customs agent.

US Import of South African Cat

I was preparing paperwork, fully expecting to pay the 1.5% duty that is typical of a sailing catamaran when I came across the Africa Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) in the HS Tariff codes which...

Re: Forward cockpit Schionning Design!

Ah, I see. Yea that does look nice. Could be nice as a layer beneath the chains. We're doing a grey epoxy barrier coat on the bottom up to the orange stripe, with clear seaspeed v10x as the...

Re: Forward cockpit Schionning Design!

We're likely to drop the shadows from it, and I may even drop the ninja or only put it on one hull, and just do the chain on both hulls.

I think I'd need to see a reference boat for the double...

Re: Lithium NMC batteries - the energy density holy grail ?

I'll have two months of full time experience with them for the atlantic crossing in june/july. I think the only variable is the voltage drop. Everything else you'd have to wait years to hear back...

Actually you're right. I had forgotten about that. The electrician opened up the alternator to rewire the internal regulator so that it couldn't take over if the external failed, and to control the...

Re: Lithium NMC batteries - the energy density holy grail ?

This is true but at typical boat C rates, it should be minimal. We put them into a compartment with ingress/egress air channels, and wired the inverter fan circuit to also trigger the compartment...

They're being installed in my new cat (actually already installed, but the boat is a month from completion so no actual experience with them). I'm not worried about them being suitable for a marine...

Re: help me understand tonnage better?? (for licenses, etc)

Thanks StuM and Catman. It seems I'm doing it right then by treating it as a monohull in the calculations, and using the freeboard as depth.
