Re: Strange motion on sailboat?

Set aside your experience with the vessel docked. As per another post, dock line tensions can create strange jerky motions.
Jerky motion is usually, but not always, due to short period. Which of the...

Re: Standing Rig: Has anyone replaced SS wire with Dyneema?

Chafe is probably the biggest issue. Neverthless there are boats around with 20 year old dyneema rigging. One fact and one observation:

Fact: (It took a lot of searching to find this info). ...

Re: Would anyone be willing to help me interpret chainplate plans?

Those are some of the most inadequate drawings I have ever seen in my many decades as a naval architect, including years of teaching yacht design. Tear those drawings up and find a qualified naval...

Re: motion sickness in cars implying susceptibility to seasickness?

Anecdotally I get car sick quite often but I have never (yet) been seasick in over 50 years of offshore sailing. So that might be good news for you.

More generally, the sensory conflict theory is...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

I had a dyneema backstay break about 5 years go (in the pen, luckily). Can't remember the make of rope, but it was professionally made up by our local rigger who supplies a lot of the offshore racing...

B and G depth transducer mechanical failure

2 years ago I fitted a B&G forward looking sonar. The transducer installs into a housing, with o-rings and a screw-down locking nut, similar to many speed logs. It also comes with a blank which you...

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 - Electric Control Panel Problem

Hello Nicolas,
I have the same control panel as you, on a 33 year-old Volvo 2003. I think they might have changed the panel design several years ago. I bought a new panel about 5 years ago but it...

Re: profurl antiwrap installation

I filed the corners of the half-crescent fitting to a nice radius, then mounted it with the crescent forward of the forestay i.e. as per the manual. This has stopped the spi hal'd hoist from catching...

Re: Boat length vs chop size and period

Actually you can scale pitch inertia in the tank (I have done it), though it is quite tricky.

Re: Boat length vs chop size and period

Yes, there are lots of factors besides length and yes, boat length relative to wave length is possibly the most important factor. However, it is the boat length relative to the ENCOUNTERED wave...

Re: Fairing hull to reduce drag

Working overhead to fair the hull would be a soul-destroying job. I suggest focussing on fairing the keel and rudder, then getting the hull surface roughness smooth. The following article explains...

Re: Beneteau first 32 v contessa 28

The Contessa 28 is a very different boat from the 26 and the 32, which many of you are familiar with. It is a Peterson design. Not all Contessas were well built (some of the S&S designed 38s leaked...

Re: Buy a boat without a survey? or even seeing it?

Why on earth would you? A survey costs maybe 1-2% of asking price, cheaper than a single repair. If you can't afford the survey then you can't afford the boat. Besides, you will probably recover the...

Re: Control of Weather Helm

I don't think the above explanation applies to this rig. Increasing mainsheet tension does two things:
a) pulls the boom closer to the centreline of the boat and

Re: Bulk & Float Solar settings for LiFePO4 batteries

Many thanks for the advice. FYI Drop-in 12V lithium packs with min/max regulator cost roughly 10-20% more than good quality AGMs, here in Australia at least. That's the initial outlay; when you...

Re: Bulk & Float Solar settings for LiFePO4 batteries

I am intrigued, not least because I am not very good at electrics. I have had LiFePO4 batteries on my boat for over a year with no problems, I just let them take whatever current is offered to them....
