Re: Are gas stoves worthwhile?

What Glassdog said. A few hours work at most. Just careful plumbing practices and even running a wire for a solenoid is a simple task. Parts costs should be under $100 US. I redid mine a couple of...

Re: Can you use the heat from fridge/freezer to warm shower water.

On the other hand the heat from the back of a photovoltaic panel might help. Direct sunlight is about 1.4KW/sq meter. Photovoltaics are about 20% efficient, so 80% of the sunlight might be converting...

Re: Through hull sealant that can go in water before cured

5200 can be removed with careful use of a heat gun. But be careful not to overheat adjacent fiberglass

Re: Through hull sealant that can go in water before cured

While Cris Cringle recommended Boat Life caulk I had an experience, granted thirty years ago, where the boat Life caulk had not set up totally after a day, under a fitting and nearly sank my boat!...

Re: Distributed Ground?

The bus bar and sub panels was addressed already. As noted above my previous question, Sub panels with more fuses is appropriate. More stuff more fuses. maybe less total wire length. Possibly a...

Re: Distributed Ground?

If there is a bus bar some distance from the main panel i think it will be fused for the ampacity of the bus bar. So how are the branch circuits from that bus bar fused? Does that scenario require...

Re: Lets talk bilge pumps

Most of the above posts are spot on. I went through a period of repeated failures of pumps and switches until I got a Johnson pump which is going on 6 years now. and I have a backup mounted above the...

Re: LPG help, morning coffee depends on it!

All the above information is spot on. One additional problem I have encountered is that current propane tank valves have a safety feature that prevents discharge of gas by opening the tank valve...

Re: Low tech topside paint

Have you tried Polane by Sherwin Wlliams? It's a commercial two part polyurethane that lasts close to forever. I used some on a metal roof in 1978 and it is still on there. Maybe not quite as shiny...

Re: Mast - Is this repairable?

What Stormalong said. I made one from a U channel bought at a scrap metal supply. Then I cut, driiled it, and had it anodized. A bargain piece of work and of course the underlying structure needs to...

Re: Buying Sailboat Back From Insurance Company

I was in a similar situation many years ago. The boat was not economical to fix even though the damage was mostly cosmetic. I spoke to an accountant to get a sense of how insurers look at these...

Re: AC green to DC negative buss ?

Part of the AC and DC safety issues do start at the harbor wiring. Twice I have been called by a boat owner who was getting shocks while working on his propeller. Both times, at different boatyards, ...

Re: Deck re-core from below

I wonder why no one has mentioned vacuum bagging? It is not all that difficult to implement and ensures a void free result with a sheet of plastic film, some breather material can can be as available...

Re: Opinion on just painting rough surfaces?

I did cover the inside of a camper shell with outdoor carpet. Glued with contact cement. Not very pretty but I preferred it to the rough fiberglass look.

Re: Kirsten Neuschafer Cape George 36 @ 7.9 knots

Let us not forget that one design races can show us how identical boats can sail at widely different speeds. The helms person and sail trimmer can make at least as much difference as the boat.

Re: F&C 44': 30yr STERN TUBE replacement: Advice?

My G-10 tube varies a bit from nominal dimensions. The OD measures 2.02" to 2.04". Not enough of a variation to cause any problems. The machined dead (fiberglass) wood part actually fits into the...

Re: F&C 44': 30yr STERN TUBE replacement: Advice?

My tube is 1.74" ID. Wall thickness is 0.123". Both measures with a dial caliper. I suspect that the manufacturer was aiming for 2" OD, 1/8" wall thickness, and 1.75" ID.

Re: F&C 44': 30yr STERN TUBE replacement: Advice?

G10 absolutely the best. I replaced my stainless steel stern tube a few years ago because the left hand metric threads had backed out enough to allow the stern tube to rotated slightly. which made me...

Re: Need input from epoxy experts

What Heywood cited. When I was building epoxy boats thirty years ago, we were able to build an admittedly small hull in four hours. Then vacuum bag it and go to lunch. We started in the morning in...

Re: Water cooled solar panels.

A couple of thoughts that might warrant consideration. Aside from the nebulous gains in electricity produced, cooling the panels does boost production. But the real gain may be the heated water. Who...
