I had the Raystar GPS on the rail as you do and it kept on being bumped...I have it now flush mounted on the transom next to the stb scugar scoop...no more bumps...

Since your kids are so young and you don't have a lot of experience I would recommend a cat that you and your wife can easily handle but large enough so you can load up and still have a good vessel....

I have been using the C series from Raymarine for a year now and I am very happy with it..the best feature IMHO is the radar overlay on charts.
I also use Maptech offshor nav on a laptop hooked up...
