Re: Satellite broadband internet, now and in the near future...

I have been working remotely from the boat for nearly 4 years. Technical work but basically 9-5, M-F with lots of customer contact. Have only tried cruising and working at the same time a few times...

Re: Crossing to Bahamas Via West Palm or Ft. Lauderdale

Leaving tomorrow? We are at Riviera Beach marina leaving late tonight (Friday the 13th!) or early tomorrow for West End. We have made the crossing several times and it's looking like a nice light SW...

Re: Short trips to the Bahamas

Hey Cs! We usually only have two weeks for vacation so you can do the "near Bahamas" in this time and still feel like you had time to sit and relax in some beautiful places. Abacos and Bimini are...

Re: 20 gig a month?

I worked from the boat M-F, 8-5 using a VPN and Remote Desktop. My usage was around 25-30GB/mo. Daily use age was about 200-300mb. If I needed to transfer large files or update my OS then I would...

Re: Live-Aboards that Commute To Work

I work remotely. Visiting the office next week and I will have to wear close-toed shoes instead of my usual flops. I am preparing my feet and they are acting like I wrapped them in insufferable...

Re: Live-Aboards that Commute To Work

We were living on a mooring in South Florida when my husband took his current 8-5 ( since January) and it is definitely more hassle than living on the dock like we do now. I needed to dinghy him into...

Re: How many kilowatts per day do you use?

Ah yes I suppose that is about right. Using and paying for full time AC is new to me and I was a little surprised by the amount used. It's a small space! But not at all efficient or insulated.

Re: How many kilowatts per day do you use?

Been at the dock since late May in South FL running AC, tv, cable box, 2-3 computers, microwave, induction plate, ice maker, outlets. Have been averaging 1200-1300kWh per month which is about 40/day...

Re: Stupid, Ridiculous Prices for Stuff

[wuote]
We pay for the medical procedures including dental care via our insurance company... nothing is free or zero cost. Whether we go to the doctor once a year or 100 times per year.... The cost...

Re: Stupid, Ridiculous Prices for Stuff

In 2018 there will be a tax on "Cadillac plans" such as this. It is currently set to be 40% above the threshold which is about $27000 for a family plan. So 40% on 8k. But there are also supposed to...

Re: Stupid, Ridiculous Prices for Stuff

That is absolutely true Tom and most dental plans cover this at no additional cost at least once a year. So he pays $0 for insurance (covered by employer) and $0 for the dental visit (preventative). ...

Re: Stupid, Ridiculous Prices for Stuff

Those are crazy rates and her employer is crazy to pay them. They could offer different kinds of plans that are more like HMOs along with an HSA and it would cost significantly less. There are a...

Re: Where is this spot in South Florida??

Riviera beach marina. It's already a construction site and my neighbor is building his boat behind me. They seem fairly lenient about boat work but you do need to keep the dock cleaned up. Right next...

Re: Stupid, Ridiculous Prices for Stuff

To be accurate though, if your good insurance is like my good insurance, they negotiated that bill by 50% and since it is preventative, it cost $0 out of pocket.
But any major dental work will cost...

Re: Single Men Living Aboard and Cruising... an honest look.

WPB is pretty nice. The downtown area (which it sounds like you have visited) is active with lots of young and less young especially during the season which is starting up now. Coming from Colorado,...

Re: Single Men Living Aboard and Cruising... an honest look.

Hard to imagine that is the case now but it likely started out intimate. And that is sad in itself as those women are obviously still in their prime. To be fair, the young beauties I mentioned were...

Re: Single Men Living Aboard and Cruising... an honest look.

If you are looking for a marina/boat yard to work in around South Florida, you might check out Riviera Beach marina. The docks are nice but the surrounding buildings are under construction. It is...

Re: Composting heads for long term Cruising?

This is not how the Airhead or Natures head works. The urine is diverted into a separate container. The main bin is mostly dry with very little moisture. This is why it does not have much smell.
Is...

Re: Composting Head when heeling

We have done exactly this. A pump from the urine tank into the holding tank. This can last a long time since you don't add water. Then dump off shore (or pump out). Made the Airhead system even...

We have a 1993 Hunter 30T (for sale coincidentally :) that we have sailed all over the keys and Bahamas. She has a shoal draft of 4.5 and we could squeak into many shallow anchorages. I think the...

Re: How much say do women really have

It was a process we went through together. We always assumed we would get a large mono. Bought a 30ft mono for vacations while attending boat shows for our eventual live-aboard cruiser. After a few...
