Is Victron BM-712 waterproof

I’m installing a Victron BM-712 Smart monitor. Can I mount it on the instrument pod, perhaps with a small bead of sealant? I don’t want to destroy an expensive monitor but it would be a convenient...

Re: Island Packet 35, are chainplates a real issue?

My boat is1989. I’ve had two chain plates fail over night. 209129
Some surveyors are knowledgeable about rigging, many are not. I would hire an experienced rigger. I would also consider replacing...

Re: Small genset or additional fuel tank?

I too have a CR 38 that has recently been refitted. I sure don’t know where you can squeeze a genset under the cockpit. Remember you need to access the genset for service. I put a 3.5 kw Nextgen in...

Back splice 8 braight

For my secondary anchor I was planning 50’ G4 chain connected to 5/8 8 braight with a back splice. I’ve done this many times with 3 strand but for some reason I’ve a mental block with the 8 plaight. ...

Re: Electric winch driver

My concern would be that a torque driver would shock load the winch leading to damage to winch gears. Full disclosure: I recently bought a Winchrite at a substantial discount at a boat show. I’ve...

Re: Cal 29 always turns to port

Some boats such as my old Morgan 32 had an offset prop shaft. Supposedly to make pulling the shaft possible without having to drop the rudder. Prop walk had to be seen to be believed.

Re: How seriously is the 2M dumping policy enforced? (Yet another poo question)

This is a question I have dealt with for many years. If at my marina, I go ashore and use their facilities. Unless it’s an “emergency “ I don’t use the boat head. Offshore the tidal currents are...

Re: what concentration HCL on gelcoat to remove tannin from mangroves

Haven’t tried it personally but some people use lemons. Cut in half and use each half as scrub pad.

Re: Lost the Rig

This is the second chain plate failure. The boat, in this case, was on the hard. One day fine, the next as you see it. Replacing all. A real PITA to get to but no choice.

Re: SeaHawk Bottom Paint - **CKS!

That is NASTY. I had that once with Petite Trinidad. One week after splashing I had to pull for a through hull. That’s what mine looked like. Petite blamed it on me but gave each of 12 of us at the...

Re: How does a diesel shut down

I’ll take this opportunity to try and learn something. I’ve spent the last 25 years with conventional diesels. Yanmar and Westerbeke. I was taught to either cut off fuel or air. The kill pull on...

Re: CALIFORNIANS: Where are you buying alcohol for your alcohol stove now?

Amazon lists it. $23/gal or about $77 for 5 gal. I didn’t see any shipping restrictions for CA but maybe at check out. Seems kind of pricey plus there is probably a a HAZMAT fee.

Re: SeaHawk Bottom Paint - **CKS!

Here in Tarpon Springs I use Seahawk BioCop TF with excellent results. Granted I use a diver once a month in summer. But here is a picture taken just after pulling the boat and before pressure...

Awlwood thining

As part of an extensive = expensive refit I am refinishing all the bright work. Those of you familiar with Cabo Rico sailboats know that is not a trivial job. After seeing another boat that applied...

Re: Change filter and bleed. Scared!

Are you sure about Yanmars self bleeding? Mine was a 3 cylinder from maybe the early 80’s and it certainly had to bleed the injectors. My current Westerbeke 46 supposedly doesn’t need bleeding but...

Re: Change filter and bleed. Scared!

My first suggestion would be to stay calm. Bleeding the fuel system is a pretty common chore and if you mess up; no harm. Just start over.
Second, I expect on the Yanmar you will have to crack the...

Re: Off the dock heating

Regarding electric blankets. Most, if not all, require a pure sine wave. Not for the blanket but for the controller.
I have heard of but not seen 12 v blankets that long distance truckers use. A...

Gulf Mexico Weather Dec-Jan

True Snore. The shallow water is a curse for waves and all too often they come from everywhere. Like being in a food processor. I’ll check the pilot charts but I have to get them back from the guy...

Re: What are your favorite drill bits?

I have a cobalt and titanium set. Somewhere I saw a YouTube video of drilling stainless. He was not too concerned with the bits. Rather he was adamant that bit speed be slow, a small cup of water...

Re: Securing Halyards

I’ve never seen any evidence of chafe with halyards held out by spreaders, no movement no chafe. Some other posts here remind me of a long time ago when I used bungy cord to hold the lines out from...

Advice needed:: Electric Drill wincher

Electric winches are nice but dang expensive for one let alone a full set. ...
