Re: Escaping a Huricane by heading out to ocean
I wonder what came of that boat. Things looked pretty rough on deck, but she was afloat and seemed to have her sea anchor out... |

Heading south...but when?
I had planned to head south from Boston to the Bahamas via Norfolk and then offshore from there, departing around the end of October? I've gotten advice that that's just pushing it too late and... |

Re: Which rig is best for a dinghy?
What if I fitted a bracket at the centerline to attach a centerboard when she's upside down on deck. (I wonder how I'd calculate the proper size for such a thing.) It could then be removed for... |

Re: Which rig is best for a dinghy?
I was leaning toward lug, as I said, but lateen has certainly caught my interest. How best to install a lee board or some way to go to windward while still keeping in mind this boat has to be easily... |

Which rig is best for a dinghy?
So I got a fiberglass dinghy. It's small--about 7' with 4' beam. There's a post right at the bow, presumably for a mast, and whether or not that's what it's for, that's what I intend to put there.... |

I forgot to follow up on this--I apologize. It was too dark/stormy/gross for much of a photo, but the halyard-as-dock-line setup was in place all stormy weekend long. As far as I could tell, there... |

Re: Using halyard as dockline?
To be clear, he detached the halyard from the jib (or rail), tied it to a cleat, and winched it in. So this improvised dockline goes to the masthead. And he seems to have plenty of normal docklines,... |

Using Halyard as Dockline?
There's a storm headed in tomorrow (40ish knots), and I noticed another boat has its jib halyard secured to a dock cleat. I've never seen this before. Is this a trick I'm not aware of? |

Excise tax racket?
I just moved aboard for the first time. I paid excise tax to the city of Boston, which is home base. I came into a marina in Winthrop (near Boston) for several days and received a ticket from the... |

I appreciate the response. So it's your opinion that most cruisers have overly heavy halyards? By what margin? |

So little imagination! The idea is that you tell me what it is you think is important to consider for your dream boat. If you need boat stats first, as if this were real, then...alas. I'm just hoping... |

Well the point is merely to see if anyone has any nuanced points of view on the matter or has, through his experiences, picked up any fussy preferences along the way. I'm not quite asking how many... |

New lines
Imagine: you come across the boat of your dreams at the price of your dreams, but it has no lines on board whatsoever. What lengths, diameters, strengths, materials, etc. do you use to outfit her? |

Lee shore... What to do...
You're single-anchored in a bit of a crescent bay. A big wind comes up, enough to worry you and putting the beach directly to leeward. What goes through your mind and what steps do you take (personal... |

That does look a little...cramped. What if you used the pole like that and the forward stay and draped it a bit more gingerly? Or I wonder if it'd be pretty unstable then. I guess I'm not going to... |

I have to know more about this over-the-water hammock setup. And on a similar note, how/where do you guys do pull-ups? Hanging things without causing damage is on my mind. |

The hammock
Are there any creative alternatives for hanging a hammock other than between the mast and forward stay? That is, alternatives you've tried. Not that some theory couldn't be helpful. Thanks, all. |

What are the downsides of a steel hull that I'm not thinking of? I've made a good number of extended passages in capable fiberglass boats, not surprisingly, but something about the steel sings to... |
