Cruising Guide to Hudson River, Lake Champlain & the St. Lawrence

I just listed an "as new" copy of the "Cruising Guide to the Hudson River, Lake Champlain & the St. Lawrence River" on Ebay. This guide covers the waterways from NYC to Montreal and Quebec, including...

Re: Anti-fouling for Prop and Shaft

I do not think you need to be too concerned about the "innards', plus what can you do about it anyway? The amount of Cu that would be introduced into the engine in the saltwater cooling has to be...

Re: Anti-fouling for Prop and Shaft

I think it is highly risky to use any Cu based paints on the saildrive leg. Strongly advise only using paint intended for aluminum. We only ever used Trilux 33 on both the SD leg and that was coated...

Re: Fullriver AGM Batteries

I had them for 7 years and sold the boat with them still OK. I think they have reduced the weight, so not sure they are now the same.

Re: Non-US citizen wanting to export a boat from Florida to Bahamas

Assuming the boat is not documented (unusual for a small boat), then exporting a 22ft boat is probably similar to exporting a car. I would guess that all you need to worry about is import...

Re: Large Older MY's, Cheap to Buy, But....

Do not under estimate the need for heat!!!
Easy for somebody who has not lived through the Boston Winter to make light of it. A good friend lived 3 seasons on a 45ft sailboat at Constitution with a...

Re: Attention: Massachusetts Boaters

Apart from cost, relying exclusively on electric heat exposes you to the risk of power outages, though I guess you could always use your generator to power heating if necessary. It can take a lot of...

Re: Trawlers

"Trawler" has become a generic term encompassing many different types of vessels. If you are interested in a blue water cruising trawler, then you should consider Nordhavn, Krogen or Selenes. These...

Re: 4JHE zincs

We have a 4JH3E. I searched everywhere on the engine, in the manual, and finally called Mack Boring before really believing that there is no engine zinc. I do have large zincs on the SD50 and prop. I...

Re: Do You Dump Your Trash Over Board?

I agree that there are container ship losses that show up, though I have yet to experience either the detritus from one or, worse, a full floating container below the surface!! However, my experience...

Re: Do You Dump Your Trash Over Board?

If you visit the Bahamas (or probably many other remote islands) you will find an incredible amount of trash washed up on every bit of untended East facing shore, much of it from boats and ships....

Re: 65' Catamaran - How to power it? High thrust outboards

Are you able to get diesel outboards where you are?? Would not consider gas OBs but diesels might make sense, though they are heavier. Figure you could lift them for safety when divers are in the...

Re: Large older MY's, cheap to buy but....

You do not live in New England and need to run your heater continuously during the Winter. Even a few hours without power and heat in mid Winter can be pretty nasty in Boston!! An inverter will...

Re: Large older MY's, cheap to buy but....

Totally agree about the PITA watermaker!! Best to take sea showers and conserve when not at the dock!! Also, your WM will only run effectively in clean water. If you try to run it in the ICW or the...

Re: Yacht Club Reciprocity?

Your first challenge is finding a yacht club with openings for new members. You will be very fortunate to find one in New England without a long waiting list (3 years plus!!). Next challenge is the...

Re: Large older MY's, cheap to buy but....

You should be able to get a 3KW inverter for about $1K plus installation.
Going larger will give you more power but less run time. 3KW will allow you to make coffee, toast, run a microwave, operate...

Re: Bug problem on Chesepeake!

We had a similar problem while anchored overnight at Solomons in early June a few years ago. Our deposits covered much of the boat but were blue in color. Perhaps the bugs had a different diet?? Good...

Re: Boarding Steps

GG: The pontoon ladder almost certainly will not fit on a dock. Most docks (in my experience) are relatively narrow. Long and narrow, not wide. Your ladder needs to be quite steep in order to fit on...

Re: Boarding Steps

Your needs are obviously different if intended for use while cruising but at our marina, people typically construct a "staircase" from 2x6 lumber and ply and secure it with lag bolts to their dock....

Re: MASSIVE price difference!!!

Not clear how complex/big the exhaust is. Are we talking about the manifold part of the engine, the exhaust riser, muffler box, etc?? But a few thoughts, for what they are worth. First, fabricating...

Re: RIB and outboard advice

The 2T wins hands down in terms of reliability and simplicity. Much less of a problem with that damned ethanol mixture as well. Also a lot lighter than a similar power 4T.
