Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I'll be very interested in the answer to this question, plus exactly what part broke and how. This is exactly the kind of information and test the JSD needs to be given to see how it copes with the...

Re: West System over Aluminium Frame: Cruiser Conversion.

Interesting boat and construction. Probably not an ideal first boat project. The plywood decks are probably the scariest part on an old boat like this. The big fractional rig is an issue. I would be...

Re: Tensioning a staysail stay

A lot of the original 'highfeild' levers were horizontal ones like you describe, sometimes even recessed into the deck. A very neat setup that is now very rarely seen.

Re: Compression support for winches

Maybe some plywood 'bulkheads' or transverse supports would help prevent any racking of the box sections. But 18mm ply is solid stuff and I reckon it would be fine on it's own.

Maybe another way...

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I don't think all of them are getting HF position fixes. If so it's a little bit disappointing. I guess it's not against the rules specifically, but it does seen against the spirit.

Finally got...

Re: Steering sheaves / pulleys

^^ that's the one!

For what it's worth I think 6mm 7x19 should be fine unless it is an exceptionally large unbalanced rudder with a high gearing ratio.

Be aware that a lot of books recommend...

Pi x D^2/4 not pi x dx2/4

6 mm x 2 X 3.1459/4 should read

6 mm^ 2 X 3.1459/4

Re: Wind Turbine Performance

I must admit, I've often wondered if a windgenerator would behave better if it was locked into the average wind direction, and manually adjusted when the wind chages. Especially downwind at sea when...

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Sounds like Istvan has ongoing steering issues with his wheel and linkages and and is back to handsteering..

Re: Tensioning a staysail stay

Some photo's of what you have would be nice. If the highfeild releasing is a concern prehaps a safety strop might work.

Re: Tensioning a staysail stay

+1

Jim, didn't you originally have a solent on a highfeild lever with a furler so you could bring it back to the mast? Seems like a very good solution, if you can stop it accidentally releasing..

Re: Tensioning a staysail stay

You should be able to safely leave the staysail stay tensioned when you release the runners. It will just slacken slightly and add a touch more prebend. It's going the other way that gets dangerous,...

Shows it spinning around a fair bit, though the wind is probably pretty disturbed.

Re: Wind Turbine Performance

Yes, seems pretty common, especially with the Air Marines in gusty conditions or a seaway. In a seaway it can get really bad as the precession takes over. I have seen people add extra large tails....

Re: Critique my running backstays thoughts.

Nice toenails.

I guess the hammock would work to prevent mast inversion, provided it had enough weight it it at all times.

Re: Selfsteering gear ..

Yvette did a fine job of building that vane. I sailed with the same system on love of Gaia. It worked very well in all conditions on a big powerful boat, though we were both slightly worried about...

Re: Critique my running backstays thoughts.

This can work well, especially on a solid mast. There are a few compromises that are worth being aware of.

It increases the compression loads on the mast due to a poor angle aft, and generally...

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I am pretty sure Mark has been diving on his boat and cleaning it during the calms. VdH has a little dinghy onboard, and I'd suspect he has also been cleaning his hull from the dinghy and the water...

Re: What is this hole for?

Looks like the top hole is for a steeper setting angle, much like the fortresses mud setting. I suspect it would give greater holding in soft mud, but make it harder to set in a firm bottom.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I wonder if the barnacles aren't adapting to Antifouling paints to some extent. It would make sense that natural selection would favour those that could attach to and spread via ship borne vectors.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

^^ The antifouling problems surprised me. Seems like it's a fleetwide issue. I think some of the longe route vessels have had similar problems.

On the other hand the windvane and mast issues are...
