Re: Need a new propeller fast-where to start?

David Gerr has a book on propellers. It's a bit technical. You will need to know algebra. One thing he mentions is a 3 blade is slightly less efficient than a 2 blade because there is less...

Re: Yanmar 4JHE oil pressure collapse.

Diesels have high compression so the bearing get destroyed very quickly without oil. Also, pistons can overheat without oil spray on the underside causing the engine to suddenly quit from friction....

Re: Are My Batteries Toast?

If a battery sits for months while discharged, sulfation occurs which means it becomes impossible to charge the battery. When a battery is discharged, the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte is...

Re: Are My Batteries Toast?

I like to test with a hydrometer. It measures the weight of the water and the sulfuric acid in the water (the electrolyte) in the batteries. When batteries are fully charged, there will be more...

Re: My universal wont start

Well, it does start at the dock. Disconnect the 120 volt power so you have no battery charger. Turn on things that use 12 volts. Take a long coffee break. Do you still have lights? I am thinking you...

Re: Mercury two stroke cutting out

I remember having this problem many years ago where the gap on one of the spark plugs was set too close. It would miss consistently and evenly at light throttle and have normal power at full power...

Re: Install electric raw water pump??

Have to have an automatic shutoff of the raw water pump if the engine is not running. If you tie it in with the key to shut down the engine, you still could have the situation where the key is on and...

Re: Mercury - I'm already desperate

While trouble shooting with oil alarms going off, I would mix some 2 cycle oil with the gasoline to keep from scoring the cylinder walls. Here is a manual for trouble shooting the mercury, assuming...

Re: Inspecting a used boat with inboard engine

Get an oil sample, preferably off the bottom of the pan, maybe by taking a bit from a drain plug that has been loosened or by a siphon. Be sure not to get any dirt in the sample by wiping the area...

Re: Prop size for Lagoon 450, Leopard 48 etc?

Just let it be. Dave Gerr's book on propellers says 10 percent over propped will not harm the engine and you have larger engine so there should be plenty of power.

Re: Is My Battery Dead or Not?

Not sure if this is desulfation: I had a battery that sat for months and discharged to 50% charge. I used a hydrometer for testing. It took a month with an intelligent charger on it full time, but I...

Re: Replacement Engine for Universal 5424

What did the mechanic say was wrong with the old Universal and what does the parts list cover? What machine shop procedures are needed? Also, the old Universal may have some residual value as it did...

Re: Yanmar YSB12 Will not start

We have many good suggestions. Next thing to do is some trouble shooting so we can pick through those suggestions. Do a compression test first. Then check starter wiring for voltage drop. Crank...

Re: Yanmar YSB12 Will not start

Worn cam lobes? Way too much valve lash? Do a compression test, but not the leak down type as you want to check more than valves and rings. Also check rocker arm movement. Leak down compression test...

Re: Is age an issue?

It's health rather than age. I doubt the artificial heart valve makes any difference about how much effort you can exert. If you have balance issues or eye hand coordination problems, then think...

Re: Water in oil, Northern Lights M643 generator

Could have a fuel cap that leaks seawater which then gets past rings? Sodium appears elevated so maybe not much sodium? About generator ground, the generator is supposed to be isolated from shore...

Re: What is this finish on my cabin sole?

Ammonia will strip shellac very quickly. Ammonia is basic like baking soda so maybe, but I could not find anything with an online search about stripping shellac with baking soda.

Re: Is this as bad as it looks?

When engine repairs are needed, do not guess, take the item apart and carefully assess the problem. If there is a manifold crack or anything needing welding, call a few automotive machine shops. They...

Re: 1973 Perkins 4.107

Re: 240 v conversion to 120v

Re: Restoring Fresh Water Tank

What causes odor in drinking water tanks is trace organics that decompose with the help of bacteria and use up the oxygen in the water. The water then goes to bacteria that do not need oxygen with...
