AIS Navigational Status Quiz

Today I committed an update to the display of an AIS targets navigational status. We only recognized Anchored and Moored before. Now we will do all the usual ColRegs statuses except sailing vessel under power, which will never happen because all of us sailors have class B transponders...

I thought a sample screenshot would be a good chance to brush up your day signals :)

I don't recall having seen many vessels actually sending these statuses in real life, but at least now we will show when they do.

I hope the extra decoration can be turned off so it doesn't clutter small screens.

No they can't. And the day you get more than 5 vessels on one screen at the same time with any of those flags set I will reconsider that.

I like this implementation, with a direct connection to the real world day signals. So much better than different colors etc, that appears in other implementations. I just entered these categories of targets into the AIS wiki documentation, so I had my brush up :D

I think there is one more target that deserves to stand out: Hydrofoils, hover-crafts and other high speed vessels.

An example that is not, for the moment, very high speed!
There is no particular daytime signal for this category. Night time there is a flashing yellow light, so perhaps some kind of yellow star-like mark could be used.

Maybe a turning on option for a better COM port or TCP/IP port interface would be better than all the graphic changes we have seen the last times.

Flashing yellow is actually only Hovercrafts?
AIS groups everything as High Speed Crafts, but has also Wing In Ground (nav status = 10). I suppose WIG is even more high speed than HSC...

There is no reason what so ever, to pick on JesperWe. He has done a blxxdy good job with his numerous contributions the last half year. O is much better and more beautiful thanks to his contributions and attention to details.
In this particular case he picks up a 2 year old feature request, and did something about it.
Have you noticed all the other bug reports and feature request that he has fixed?

Sniping on our developers achieves very little.
What you ask for, is one of the major goals for the next stable release, which Dave has clearly stated. It is being worked on and will soon(ish) appear in a beta.
As always, you are very welcome with your own contributions!

FWIW,

I have never downloaded, used, or even seen an install of Open CPN... but I appreciate greatly the time and effort that you all have put into it! I think the entire cruising community owes you a debt, as the features you incorporate drive the commercial developers to strive to 'keep up' as well as making the 'off the shelf' applications much more affordable.

From previous posts I think you, CARCODE, are technically capable of contributing, so why don't you get involved in the new TCP/IP interface yourself?

Having used ais for the first time last week, and through Rotterdam, where we had at one time 25 moving targets within 2 mile radius, I have to congratulate you for the crisp and easily understood graphics display. (825 on the list in 20 miles)

In my humble opinion ocpn ais that is immediately understandable without deep consultation of the manual is definitely in the good bracket.

Ais is a real boon when coming up to hidden dock entrances, much like another eye on the top of the mast that can see through buildings and trees.

I think very useful for the safety of the own crew could be a smart handling of AIS SART signals! (so the AIS signals sent in case of MOB, by the person in the water - with an AIS SART transponder in the life vest).
From my point of view AIS SART is a great thing and OpenCPN should may be do the following (priorities in this order)
- display such data in a special way
- initiate an acoustic alarm
- decide if the signal is coming from own crew (by means of individual MMSI)
- if own crew is detected to be the MOB, change the autopilot output in a way that the boat turns into the wind (Autopilots from NKE offer a similar feature linked to individual small "crew transmitters" )
If needed we should organize a donation for getting an AIS SART device for tests.
