Raymarine E80 CCFL

Hi All,

I have a Raymarine E80 MFD that has a CCFL going bad. For some interesting reasons Raymarine lists the unit as under Warranty but when sent in for repair tells me that it is not covered (it was a demo unit that I bought "new" from West marine).

Anyway, Has anyone replaced the CCFL lamp in one of these? I'll be doing the replacement myself assuming I do not find a replacement LCD. If nothing else it will be a journey of discovery.

Regards, E

PS I have replaced a few CCFL over the years....

I'd gripe @ West Marine, they may surprise you and make it good. It should carry a full Mfr Warranty, is RM saying that part's not covered ever or just because it was a 'demo' ????

Exactly, I expected a full mfg warranty and indeed I registered the MFD on the Raymarine site which says that I have a warranty till 2014.

The warranty person at Raymarine has said that the unit is old and is not covered because it is a demo unit. I asked where on the Raymarine warranty page does it say that demo units are excluded and to explain why the site listed the unit as in warranty. They kept telling me that I did not have a receipt that was valid (of course I do, one from westmarine).

I have sent an email to West Marine telling about this and have filed a Raymarine support ticket asking them to show where demo units are excluded so as to form a paper trail.

I am hopeful that one ot the other would make good on this but if noting comes from it there will be a nice tutorial on replacing the CCFL for an E80.

Regards

PS here is a capture of the product registration with a clear indication that the unit is in warranty.

Just an update.....

Raymarine has returned the E80 and says that it is not covered under warranty regardless of the webpage. It is a demo unit and has been turned on for too long. So be it.

I'll be replacing the CCFL tubes soon. I'll most likely make a webpage covering the process. Till then I opened it up to see which specific CCFL tubes it uses. There are 3 U shaped CCFL tubes in it. They can be ordered here:

175mm U Shape CCFL Backlight Lamp - 3.0mm Diameter

175mm x 22mm x 3mm

The light box behind the LCD is quite large. perhaps 3/4" deep. THis makes me think that one could convert to white LED for the backlight.

I'll replace the tubes and then if it does not work well due to the CCFL power supply I'll consider an LED conversion. Getting a dimmer for the LED is the only trick.

I've been taking photos of the dis-assembly and will get many for the repair and re-assembly to go along with a writeup. Should be interesting.

Regards, E

how did the replacement go?
I may do the same thing with my C70.
Was it easy to crack open the unit?

It went well and I did not have much of a problem in opening the case. Not sure how the C70 is.

The only problem to speak of is that the replacement CCFL are a mm or 2 longer so I had to break the plastic end mount for the CCFL (on the U section side) and make a new on out of plastic that I glued in place.

Should I do it again I'll ask the vendor if they have any CCFL that are an exact match rather than assume that the tubes are a standard size.

No more flicker, nice and bright, and $45 rather than $450+.

I took many photos during while taking it apart. At some point I'll make a web page describing what I did. I did keep each set of screws in their own container so as to not mix them up.

Regards

thanks - what is the first step to getting the unit open? This is often the tricky part - once you can see the screws it can be more straight-forward.
Does one part or face lever off as first step??

On the E80 the whole front plastic bezel is snap on. You just have to locate the points where the attachments are and pry it off. No BFI involved (Brute Force and Ignorance).

Once the plastic bezel is off there is an aluminum plate that holds a water tight gasket against the housing and faceplate. 10 or 12 screws hold them tight.

For those who are interested I took photos along the way in replacing the CCFL in my E80. You can view them here:

Albums: Raymarine E80 CCFL replacement | Morgan le Fay

The CCFL tubes were about 2 mm too long and I needed to modify the E80 to support them well. It may be possible to get some shorter tubes. 3 tubes are needed which I bought from CCFL warehouse.

175mm U Shape CCFL Backlight Lamp - 3.0mm Diameter

So far all is well with a flicker free display.

Do you still have those images? (They aren't on your site anymore.) I've got an e80 I swapped out last summer where the backlight has burned out. I am waffling on whether to chuck it or try and replace the light and sell it.

I have used LED strip lighting, stealing 12v from the fan (on the 120) or other 12v circuit. Self adhesive, stick to the back of the light box, cut into 12v segments.

Blast from the past. Cool.

I have those photos out somewhere on NAS and can find them for you if you want them.

But, I've long since replaced the E80 with an E127 that I got on sale. I'm sure there are nicer compatable MFD available now.

If I were to do it again I would likely use LED as noted by sy_gilana.

Let me know and I'll dig them up.

Thanks  I'd probably go LED but I was just trying to figure out if it was worth even trying. I bought my refurbished replacement e80 for $400...the internet is amazing sometimes.
