Outboard Engine lift 120 pound
 
Hi

I am looking for an outboard engine lift for my 120 lb., Yamaha 4 stroke.

I have a 44 ft CC Irwin.

So far I am considering Kato Marine 230. Which does not require a winch, and uses a 4 to1 block and tackle. ( $800- to $900 )

Swing Lift from Canada which uses the main halyard and a pivot system. ($600).

I had a guneig? on my hunter 37. It required a nearby winch and always seemed to be straining to lift my 85 pound outboard. There are no winches near the stern on my CC Irwin.

I will be lifting the engine on and off alone.

I would appreciate any input, good or bad, or suggestions.

We have an OB lifting derrick with 4:1. Itís OK on the 15 HP Mercury 2-stroke. I think itís about 75 #. It requires a bit of finess. I consider it borderline. I think 6 part would be a lot more comfortable for #120. Remember also there is friction in the blocks. It can add up if the blocks are journals instead of rolling bearings. If a block twists then add in drag of the lines as well.

We lift the outboard motor, (or the dingy, or both together) on the side of the boat with a spinnaker halyard led to a primary winch. With a large three speed winch it is quick and easy. We use two people. With one person you have the danger of needing to be in two places at once, and you can't be, but I've done it plenty of times.

Lifting with halyard at the side of the boat reduces the Up and down you get at the stern. (but you have to hook up the halyard then scramble up to the winch, and the complications don't stop there). However, with two it is easy.

If you lift your dingy out of the water at night you are already half way there.

We store the motor midships (actually below deck) or the whole dingy and motor on the foredeck. This keeps weight off the ends of the boat.

Take a look at the Forespar Nova Lift, good for up to 220 Lbs. We have one on our boat for our Merc 15Hp engine and it works very well for us.

Ref winch, with a block you can use a winch that is a long ways away.
I use our sheet winches to raise our dinghy for example.

Several boats have a cheek block installed on the outboard end of the boom. Lead a halyard through that, and the boom acts as the crane.

A slick system, works well, and uses gear you already have without cluttering up the deck and rails with un-needed stuff. A little care in the positioning of the rail-pad for the outboard so it is right under the end of the boom, and manual handling of the outboard is a thing of the past.

On our boat the mizzen boom lifts the outboard without a hitch.

Autocorrect!!! Mine does both.

The lift, attached to the aft rail, has an arm that rotates 360. The 4-part block is on the arm end. We swing the lift over the motor, lift and swing the motor to the rail bracket. It is similar to this but the heavy post has a plastic top and bottom bearing so the entire unit can rotate continuously.
