Sailboat title search and insurance

Anyways, I want to avoid mistakes buying a boat that has not been wrecked, liens and other issues as well as boat insurance. What are some good boat insurance companies and title search firms?

Thanks,
Ben

Anyways?? I assume you are in the US and purchasing a boat in the US?

1) Title searches and insurance will not have information on damage or repairs.

2) A Title search will indicate if there are liens. The title should indicate whether there is a lien holder right on the title. Many non-title state, such as CT list the lienholders on the registration.

3) The Hartford, Foremost and Progressive are common boat insurers. Boat US offers insurance, however if the boat is more than 10 yrs old they frequently farm you out to Progressive.

Yes, boat is in San Diego, California and will be used as coastal cruiser.

Re: Sailboat title search and insurance

One big difference (at least on older boats) is that BoatUS will want a survey; this was going to cost $800 for my Alberg 35. Progressive offered insurance at a declared value for the boat, which I set at what I paid for it (which is also approximately what it's sold for every time it's sold in 50 years!). No survey required.

I have never had a claim with Progressive. About three weeks ago, a guy in the marina rammed his stern into mine, doing some cosmetic damage. His insurance is Allstate and so far they've been great about the claim. Progressive said I could handle it through them and they would go after Allstate, or I could try going direct. I chose to go direct to Allstate. In the event, they are dealing directly with the marine service company doing the work, I"ll never see a check but I'll also never pay a bill for the insurance damage and it's my choice of company working on the boat.

If the boat is USCG Documented you can buy an abstract of title for $25 from them.

If not it is more complicated as you will be doing UCC searches in each state that you choose.

Not comparable to Real Estate.

Strange since BUS use to offload its insurance operation to Progressive. Guess they do not do that anymore.

I can recommend Pacific Maritime Title in Seattle for all things title related.
If you do a search you will find I am not alone.

Pacific Maritime Title

I use an marine insurance broker. They work for you, not the insurance company.
I can recommend:

Twin Rivers Marine Insurance Agency |

No affiliation with either, just a satisfied customer.

I ran a delivery business in San Diego for a number of years and my clients always swore by using Donna Jenkins whose office used to be on Rosecranz . She was trustworthy, reasonably priced and quite a nice person. Phil

Progressive so far (10 years) has been good- quick local claims adjusters, quick fair claims payment, they let you find 3 quotes and then they pay the lowest if you want to do the work yourself, they cut you the check. No survey required and multiple boat and multiple policy discounts and disappearing deductible if you are (incredibly) lucky enough to go claims free for 3 years. I have 2 boats and 2 cars and homeowners with them and I save overall about 20%.

Sailpower is correct. If a documented vessel it's $25 for an online abstract of title from the US Coast Guard National Maritime Center. They take credit cards. Any liens, mortgages, mechanics and merchant liens or any other encumbrance that is not on a US Coast Guard abstract of title for a documented vessel has no priority and may be deemed completely invalid.

We also used Donna Jenkins service last year for our boat. Satisfied with service. Still located on Rosecranz a little ways past Shelter Island.
