Pesky Words

Love this forum, but totally new to sailing. I'd like to suggest a glossary of nautical terms and boat terminology. I can't understand many of the abbreviations, acronyms and what have you. What do think, floatable idea? Thanks, chile1

Good idea but glossaries or dictionaries of nautical terminology are readily available either in printed from or on the Internet.

Welcome aboard, chile1. Is your name about Chile, the country, or the condiment?

There will mostly be internet slang abbreviations here, most boat things are written out in full the first time in a post, and may be abbreviated later. Not always, of course, just an observation.

FWIW, (for what it's worth) s/s means stainless steel. Do feel free to ask about anything that puzzles you.

Thanks for the welcoming words Ann. It's all about the country, not the condiment. Cruising Forum is inspirational; I'm 3 years from retirement. I live in Kyoto, Japan or I should say my body is here but my mind is out on the waves. John Montpetit.

Welcome aboard. My wife and I lived in Talca for a year. Loved it! We now live on a 38 foot C&C. We are just costal cruisers. Shucks, we even own an automobile! I wanted to sell it when we downsized but the wife would not hear of it! Shuttling the car is a pain but it sure is nice when we stay in one place for more than a week or two.

Maybe you could stow a glossary by your binacle so you could tell wether you were stuffing a yankee or a mule into your lazzarette!

What's a mule? (were you talking weather or whether?)
