Stuffing box water intake

Changing my fuel filters yesterday I noticed a thru hull leading to the stuffing box. It appears closed. Boat is new to me (Beneteau 400). It looks a little rough so im scared to open but have put like 20 motoring hours on this as is. I assume it should be open...anyone familiar?

That valve should be open especially while motoring. Assuming that you have the Volvo original shaft seal, the hose from the thru hull is supposed to continuously provide cooling water to the cutless bearing when the vessel is moving forward.
A word of advise. That hose enters the shaft log with a nipple epoxied to the fiberglass log and that nipple could easily snap off as mine did luckily while on the hard. Good Luck.

Welcome to CF mj...:thumb:

If your box has a water feed, then most certainly running it that way is the way to go... I don't think you can have too much cooling/lube water on a PSS... I assume this is your seal... Have seen Volvo shaft seals with this too...

Still somewhat confusing. To use or not? I guess I will try and open it but it looks a little worn. What could go wrong! Thanks all.
