Dumb Questions Or Comments Aboard Yachts

Thought this may be fun..
For example, i was skippering a day charter in Hawaii and one of the guests asked me how far above sea level we were ?
I leaned over, looked at the water and said Hmmm about 5 feet.

I say there are no stupid questions*, however, there seems to be a huge number of very inquisitive idiots.

*(other than ones that had just been answered but the listener was too busy taking or texting to listen)

I was sailing out of the harbour near Navy pier in Chicago, finally cut the engine , sails up. One of our very non sailing friends simply refused to believe the wind was pushing us along !!! . After much talk pointing out we didn't have any other propulsion system at work, the revelation to her was akin to a religious conversion !!

Haha! We have gotten the same question before, with the same answer. The next comment was "Oh, I thought because we were in the Bay it would be different". Good stuff. There's been a bunch over the years, but I haven't had all my coffee yet. A few that come to mind-

- I was telling a co-worker that I was going down to Charleston, SC for the weekend, but would be back for work on Monday. The co-worker asks "Oh, that'll be nice, are you going down in your sailboat?" (It's about 500 miles each way.)

- "So, can you make your own diesel onboard?"

- "Where's your dishwasher?"

I've been surprised by t he number of times I've been asked where we put enough food for a year (not understanding that the majority of the time is spent anchored next to a small village or town)

Working at the Newport boat show with the Pacific Seacraft dealer, a visitor asked "how far can this boat go?"

All professions have the 'questions'.

Mine..

"Hey Doc"

me "yeah?"

" I cant see very far.."

me "really? Step over to the window... now look up..what do you see?"

"Well. I can see the sun.."

me.. "well how much further do you want to see..?"

It had been a long day.................

That would be a very good question here, in a land with NO mail delivery and a condemned Post Office. The answer is that we don't get mail.

Try explaining that to people like the idiots manning the US social security office, who absolutely INSIST on using the mail, and then act like it's my fault when I don't receive a single thing they send me.

Question to a cruise-ship captain on a transoceanic trip: "where does the crew sleep?" (There are about one crew member for every two passengers.) Answer: "they are flown by helicopter to home port every night."

The difficulty I have with "how do you get your mail?" is that it is used disapprovingly of the cruising lifestyle. I could care less about mail, personally.

Or the suppliers who require a street address and won't ship to a Post Office box, but only use postal services for delivery. :banghead:
