Where do you stow outboard tank ?

hello!
this has probably been discussed, i just haven't found it, so any pointers would be appreciated (google wasn't too useful here). so: i have a 2 stroke outboard, as many do, which has its own (external) tank, which i need to store somewhere. sail lockers are probably not a good idea - fumes and all, neither safe nor legal i believe. i thought i'd build a sort of an external locker mounted on the stern pulpit rail or some such, but doesn't look like there's all that much space for a 11dx11wx15l locker (LeComte NE38). how do you solve this problem? the boat is not a "hard core cruiser" like a Tayana 37 say with tons of stowage space, but more like a coastal cruiser.
thank you!
anton

I shove mine in the lazarette with the spare diesel and paint thinners, oil, and some muratic acid.

Its really getting a little unsafe....

Sounds like a "Superfund Clean-up Site"

Hello!

When ordering the boat i specified two ventillated (up and down ventillaton) compartments, executed by partitioning the cockpit lockers (under benches). One is for gas bottles, second for dinghy fuel.
Regards.

I keep my gas can on the aft deck. It is tied to my stern pulpit. No danger from fumes and should there be a failure it is on deck astern, thus no immediate danger to anyone belowdecks. You can see the red gas can in this photo.

Jim, thank you. This could work, although I was hoping for a more permanent installation...

Of course it depends on the boat. I don't see any problem with stowing it in a locker with the tank vent screwed tight. I keep mine in the dink on the arch. In summer when I store the boat I keep it in the cockpit stowed under the helm seat. It's in the shade. If really concerned you could empty the gas into a jerry jug and stow on a side deck.

Like Mark I have a lazarette locker with all sorts of oil, transmission fluid, ob oil, etc. etc. I decant most of these fluids into 2 gallon gasoline jugs that are much stronger than the original flimsy plastic bottles they come in.
