emily reef wreck...ships log | Finally made it over to the b… | Flickr

Page Description:
Finally made it over to the bleep on my radar which has attracted my curiosity for the last 5 years. It actually sits right on top of the reef. We took our dingy over to at high tide and clambered on board to join the birds. The wrecks been here a long time ..just one reef north of where Cook hit. We had to be careful of the deck lest we fell thru. STORY OF THE WRECK... I don't know the vessels name but there is no doubt that it was deliberately grounded by her skipper, Richard Brooks, in 1987. She is the ‘Debut’, sister ship to the Greenpeace vessel ‘Rainbow Warrior’. Stories as to why Richard Brooks grounded his vessel vary – some say he was requested to leave the country and at that time Emily Reef lay just outside Australian waters, while others say it was because he had been denied permission to run the vessel as a passenger ship. In any case, he lived on board after the grounding for some time with his partner, occasionally travelling to Cooktown by tender or friendly local fishermen for supplies. His partner tired of the life and left, and after living for some years on his own, Richard eventually left too. By the end he had no tender so couldn’t get ashore, and was relying on local fishermen to drop off supplies.
