I have done this run many times over the years. In the winter the winds are 60/40 Westerly and you can expect to be doing a lot of motoring or waiting for a favourable wind, so make swure that you have a lot of time. Going round Cabo de Gata in a westerly is practically impossible and I can remember sheltering behind it watching large ship making heavy weather of it. Once you get to Gib you can wait for an easterly and then go for it. Study the tide tables for the Straits and you will see that there are several currents and you can plan to use these to give you a few extra knots instead of fighting them. The German U boats used the currents to drift through into the Med during the war. Best of luck.
