If only casual, fair weather sailing, few night passages, forget AIS. It is only as good as the vessels that have it AND have it turned on.

Radar? A set of eyes on deck day and night will do.

Auto Pilot? Good investment. If you single-sail, gives you a break for a head call, cup of coffee, grab a beer, etc.

GPS beats working with charts trying to figure out position.

VHF radios which I'm outfitting, Standard Horizon MX2200, with DSC, GPS, and AIS functions. Handheld VHF has DSC, GPS, and locator function.

Chartplotters are great for planning. GPS input gives you position at a glance. Using a laptop as a chartplotter here. Advantage is, already have the laptop, software, antenna. BUT not weatherproof, no dimmer controls, and I do other things on my laptop.

So my list for intended type of sailing:
    VHF/DSC Radio (with GPS)
    VHF Radio (Handheld)
GPS unit with anchor alarm function
    Backup GPS
    Auto Pilot
    Depth Sounder
    Windex
    Chartplotter

    Good Luck!
