    Hi there,

Hoping you can help me out on understanding whether OpenCPN is the correct choice for me.

Quick background - USCG 50-ton captain with a fair amount of blue water experience. Am planning to "head south" in the fall with an eye toward heading West for a possible circumnavigation.

I have a Garmin chartplotter and want a tablet or pc-based chartplotting software. Currently have iNavX on an iPad, but haven't really used it much yet.

I want something that displays raster charts and makes it easy to purchase and install them in remote locations (with a wi-fi or G4 connection) and offers basic route planning and weather routing for rumb line and great circle routes.

I profess that I am not even entirely clear as to what OpenCPN offers or what it offers vis-a-vis iNavX. I have googled several times trying to find a primer in one of the yachting magazines, but have not come up with much that's helpful.

I'm sure you have thoughts on the subject. Would love to hear them!
    Scott
