Howdy! My name is Steadman Uhlich. Send a Private Message. I will reply ASAP, if I am not offshore.
Curiosity + Knowledge + Experience = Point of View + Humility + Humor
Despite 40+ years of studying boats, varied experiences sailing, and 8,150 nautical miles of offshore blue water passage-making under my keel, I claim no expertise here on this forum and humbly come with open mind and wide ranging curiosity, ready to learn. I am open to learning from anyone, be they Old Salts or those who have less experience or years or miles.

I am not a hard-core racer, but I have sailed or raced on dinghies and small boats like a Thistle, Prindle 18 Cat, Cal 20, a classic wood Folk Boat, J-24s and J-29s, Hobie 33, J-35, and voyaged on larger boats like Beneteaus, Maxim 380, Jeanneau 42, J-42, Swan 48, Skookum 53, Lagoon 52, and others. As part of a competitive race crew I sailed on San Francisco Bay while changing headsails in 20+ knots winds on the cold and wet pitching foredeck of a J-35 in many races. I was a crew on an offshore race to the Farallons on a Santa Cruz 50 ULDB "sled" at 20+ knots (boat speed!) and got time steering a Farr 40 race boat on a fast run during an overnight race in high seas off the California coast. I have experienced both a true strong gale and flat calm while on a 30 day passage from Hawaii to San Francisco on a 37 foot sloop (I was the navigator and no GPS was used). In 2017 I sailed offshore from Norfolk VA to Halifax Nova Scotia, then to Newfoundland, where I cruised the coast for a total of 30 days and 1,600 nm, sailing in dense fog, and close to icebergs in cold 42 degree water. In May 2018 I sailed 1200nm, all offshore from Florida to Maine on a Skookum 53. In June 2018 sailed on Lagoon 52 from Charleston to New York, 640nm and all offshore. In July 2018 sailed 1750nm offshore from Cayman Islands to upper Chesapeake on a 38’ cat.

Need experienced crew on a passage or cruise or delivery? I am an experienced and responsible watch-stander, certified in ASA courses (ASA 101, 103, 104, 105), am a very good cook, know something about navigation, I am a professional artist photographer, and am considered a cheerful guest or shipmate, trustworthy and honest, a good conversationalist, a very positive person, and I am always happy to help or lend a hand. There are many verbatim testimonial comments about my character, personality, trustworthiness, and my skills found online on my studio website SteadmanUhlich(dot)com. Here is a link to my extensively detailed online Sailing Credentials (draft):

I have written hundreds of free Sailing Tips, that answer many questions and can save a sailor much time and money. These Sailing Tips can help Newbies to Old Salts. You will find them here:

I still hope to find my mate in a merry mermaid.
Art and sailing are two of my passions. Google my name to see examples of my art and work.
