Why Did You Choose Your Dog , Cat , Bird etc ?
My cat spot traveled 60k miles with me in a semi when I was a professional driver and took to it quite well so it was an easy changeover for him to the boat. Minion the kitten was a gift from my son saying spot needed a companion. Both do well while under sail. Spot comes out and lays on the companion way hatch and minion roams the cockpit floor since hes so small, thankfully lol

You're son must be a fan of Despicable Me. A yellow cat named Minion, lol! Or am I forced to watch too many kids movies with my kids?
I chose my dog Bruno because mastiffs are awesome! He's been a great salty dog for us...

Re: Why did you choose your dog, cat , bird, etc?
i chose my kitten when he was just born--- he sounded like a maine coon mix--the best kinda kitty-- and when i got him at 5 weeks of age, he was skeereded bad--also hurt by the former folks as he was brought to me-- i put him inside my shirt for a few hours of driving around inmy car for a friend, and when i got to my boat, he was sooo happy--has been my buddy ever since-- has been 5 and almost half yrs now-- best kat i ever met--HUGE kitty, but not a big as should have been for being a maine coon mix. he loves his home and his momms and never once got seasick. gooood kitty,my pinche gato feo....
he has 7500 miles at sea......and counting....has sailed the gulf of mexico and pacific ocean...

Actually, our Mickey & Megan found us. They were abandoned and we took them in. Sadly Megan lost her battle with cancer. Mickey is 13 and we wouldn't dream of travelling without him. He's a big boy at 19 pounds and walks on a leash.

I was a landlubber, living on land with a sailboat. When I decided to move aboard I hoped they would like it. They are happier on the boat than they ever were on land -- they fought -- badly, and a lot. I thought I was going to have to give one of them away. I have a screened in cockpit for at the dock and they spend most of their time there. While moving (sail or motor) they stay below. It's worked out extremely well.
One has shown an interest in catching the occasional palmetto bug that crawls aboard, a very good trait in Florida.

We chose our Wheaten Terrier "Jib" for...
1. Size. For our circumnavigation voyage we wanted a dog that is not too big for our boat life, but big enough (with a good bark) to make a thief hesitate. Jib is about 35lbs but looks bigger if we let his hair get shaggy. He is a perfect mix of just the right amount of boat/territory protectiveness and loving friendly to strangers we introduce.
2. Non shedding. We don't like hair in the bilge. And he is the BEST cockpit companion on those cold night watches. He will keep you warm and awake!
3. Trainable. All dogs are, of course. Jib quickly learned both to "go" only on his piece of AstroTurf up at the bow, and to go "on command". He also does not lift his leg to pee, but squads like a female (some training but mostly luck I think!). In nasty weather coming up the Big Sur coast, Jib (clipped in in poor weather) was clipped to his jackline and made his way allll the way up to the bow (waves, spray, wild) to pee on his pad...he refused to go anywhere else!
4. Good swimmer. Not a Lab, but loves swimming.
5. Great with our cat "Stays'l". They are best buds and can play rough and tumble. Jib plays but is gentle.
Cat...Staysl was chosen for...
1. Spunkiness! Energy.
2. Lonnng tail (good balance aboard)
3. Hunting. He us an incredible fly (or anything that moves!) hunter.
But...imagine us sailing all last summer with those two plus my 10ft Boa Constrictor "Romeo" and my Red Tail hawk "Chinook" onboard! Yeah yeah we got the Noah's Ark label!

My youngest daughter is a vet tech. She called me and wanted to know if it was ok if she brought a dog home to foster until they found it a home. For some reason I said yes, that's been 5 years ago & Bella a rescue Australian Shepard is my boat dog now. She is blind & deaf from birth but just considers it normal and enjoys being alive. Makes me feel lucky that she picked me.

Re: Why Did You Choose Your Dog, Cat, Bird etc. ?
We chose Toby because we liked the traits of the breed (Entlebucher) and considered him a smaller dog more suitable to cruising than the Rottweilers we had previously. We have since learned that while small by Rottweiler standards, 60 pounds is still a lot of dog on a boat. He is all we wanted but more. He is 12 this month and still healthy and active so he should be around for a long while.
If he passes while we are still cruising, we would probably get another dog. Consideration for future dog, smaller but not yappy and non-shedding would be a real advantage.

Wow, blind & deaf. That just leaves feel and smell. How to you communicate with her for training etc.?

She was trained by prisoners at Leavenworth state prison, part of the Safe Harbor rescue group. She is boat trained;-) has to go ashore twice a day. She has some vision in one eye enough to see shadow & light, has a great nose to help her in familar places but if something is moved she'll walk into it. Always take her out on a leash for walkabouts, if no leash on when we go out she goes to the car, knows it's ride time. She is the best behaved pet I've ever had.
