My uncle told me that the yellow lines in the middle of the road were for bicycles.

As a young lad in rural New England and upstate New York...
I was amazed how large a family the Anti-q's were.
Antiques signs were in front of just about every house,
actually still are...they just pronounce there name differently now!

Re: Very Funny Misconceptions ...

I actually had an aunt named "Teak" (I'm sure different spelling, but the pronunciation was the same). She was actually a great, or great-great aunt because she was very old and died when I was 7yr old or so. We visited her several times a year, but that's beside the point.

The point is that whenever I saw signs for "antiques" or heard someone discussing "antiques", I thought they were named after my aunt because they were very old.

BTW, this only makes sense if you know that in the midwest US, where I grew up, "aunt" is pronounced indistinguishable from "ant".

Re: Very Funny Misconceptions ...

While building a steel sailboat in Santa Cruz, Ca. I had a yard wanderer look at it and say..."Steel floats"? I looked at them and stated..."Well...they build steel surf boards don't they"! It was fun watching them walk away more puzzled.

Re: Very Funny Misconceptions ...

When I was 10 or 11yrs old an older kid told me a joke at school. I went home and proudly proclaimed to my Irish Catholic mother, "Hey Mom bend over and crack a smile". Appalled she could barely ask "where on earth did you hear that, do you know what it means?" I calmly bent over looked at her innocently and smiled. Many a laugh was had years later!

My son asked 'What do you mean'?

Well she said 'There are no trees?'

Totally confused he said 'What's with the trees?

Well she said ' There are no trees to make this wind so how can it be'?

He asked the obvious...'How do trees make wind'?

Totally serious she then said 'They wave the air'.

Apparently she had believed this from when she was little, probably taking her mum's cute explanation from when a child.

I will admit as a child i firmly believed the tide when high on our coastline the offshore islands facing us would therefore be having a low tide as surely the water in the straight 'tipped'

How come this is in "Women Afloat"?

Turns out pepperoni is NOT made out of goat meat, despite what dad told me when I was a kid. I was a 2nd year student in VET school when I happened to read the label.....

Re: Very Funny Misconceptions ...

I too thought this was for women only, but ...

I assume lots get this questions

When some folks (both men and women) find out that I have done a a couple of passage from Hawaii, I am asked,

1) Do you need a lot of maps for that? (I know they mean charts)
2) What do you do at night?

I had a business lunch. I ordered and then the young person (19 or 20ish) I was meeting with said: "What's a steak sandwich?"

Yeah, he didn't get hired.

What about that guy who wanted to raise his waterline and needed to know how much spray foam to add to the inside of his hull to make the boat float higher.
