One thing to consider is that occasionally you might have to leave him onboard when you need to go somewhere and it might be too hot too leave him in a vehicle while you are in a store or whatever. It gets hot inside a boat too and you'll need some kind of AC. I bought a portable unit that fits under the comanionway ladder. Only 7K btu, but keeps it tolerable. You would need shore power of course to run one.
I agree that Pit Bulls are wonderful. I deeply miss my "Shadow" who passed away recently. Have his ashes on the boat. Decided on a Lab for my next dog because Pits are so very misunderstood and are not allowed in lots of places. Kind of like having a pet dragon. Also, they swim like rocks.

Though if you absolutely feel the need to have an animal on board I think a monkey might be the best choice. They could be trained to handle the lines, climb the mast to replace a lost halyard etc. Don't know if I would trust them at the helm though.

It seems to me that finding a cruising sailboat in the 30-40ft range will present a greater challenge then your one source for unconditional love.

When you go boat shopping, take him with you.

Just in case someone might take this seriously, let me discourage the monkey thoughts. Back in '72, when I was "young and in manure", we had a pet monkey aboard. Our capuchin required much care and he was a terror on the boat. We were never able to fully provide the quality of life he deserved and we were constantly disappointed with him and ourselves. He even nearly sunk our boat when he was left unattended. We came home to find water above our bilge ceiling!
