You told your family yet? I'd imagine that'd be almost as hard a task as finding the right boat.

What sort of anchor are you planning on using once you do stop? There was a limited edition Rocna made with a more flexible shank. They are hard to find, even though almost everyone thinks they have one.

Official unofficial - who gives a rats, its been done. The link given to route referenced an article by Nancy Knudsen. I am sure a retired TV weather girl is qualified to comment.

But in any event - there is no more a record for Youngest according the the "official" definitions. So no one can "officially" beat Jesse Martin. According to "official" rules. So the best you can do is unofficially beat Jesse and maybe Jess

Re: Time to beat the big record.

Try to get hold of a Volvo Open 60. These boats are seriously fast and were designed for single handing around the world. There's a 2007 model for sale in the US for $350,000. Here's the link IMOCA open 60 yacht for sale pictures & specifications Volvo 60, class 40's specialist brokers

Scroll down the page when you open the link and you will see some other 'go-fasts'.

Best of luck.

And of course eminently affordable for the average 16 year old.

Re: Time to beat the big record.

Four years on cup-o-soup and freezedried veggies? Jesus,no way i would even think about it. How big a boat do you need to carry a four year supply of sundowners? Let's see, that would be something like 150 bottles of gin, 800 liters of tonic, 300 limes, and say a thousand pounds of ice.

Kids gonna need a momma of a boat.

Re: Time to beat the big record.

Look up Orange 3, It held the fastest circumnavigation, 53 days I think it was, to go round the earth.

But that cost millions by a Bllionaire who could afford it,,

Previous post is a good start, for learning any way, about sailing around the globe,

Lock your self in a room, Have no contact with any one, all food and water must be in the room with you, as you cant open that door for any reason whatso ever, Not even for extreme sickness,
Thats what sailing single handed is, Totally alone and no outside help what so ever, even if you are extremely sick or injured,
There is only you, and you alone, No phone, no Internet, no friends, nothing,

Are you a loner, do you know what a loner means, can you spend months alone at sea with no one around you,

Sure i will answer your question if it is how do i inspire people and get their respect. The person on this forum who has inspired more people in the history of the forum is Gordy, Is is also the most respected and has helped more than any other person here. He has never tried to prove himself to any one.

I really want to beat this record and I have thought about it for some time now and it's what i want to do.

So i need a fast and extremely strong sailboat, who has some ideas. Please give me some good answers....

OK Chucklet, you are either a great troll or a naive youngster who knows three fifths of five eighths of FA. Again not a criticism, we all start out that way.

Assuming the later, let me give you some answers first (and then the lecture).
1. Forget the Hunter - don't even ask why, just trust me on this one.
2. For a fast 30 - 45 Footer built for fast solo (or short handed) ocean racing, I suggest the Open 40 ( Class40 ).

As for duration of voyage, let's look at some maths. RTW (once) via southern capes and crossing the equator twice is about 24,000 nm. So a double will be about 48,000 nm. At a 100 nm per day, that is about 480 days. A 100 nm per day is a modest cruising average and you are planing fast so lets say 200 nm per day. This is now only 240 days or about 8 months. Mind you, I don't think you will average 200 nm per day but right now, that doesn't matter.

Now for the lecture .

You simply don't know enough to ask the right questions so do yourself a big favour and read every book written by (Sir) Robin Knox Johnston and by Jon Sanders. While there are many other all worthy of reading, please believe that what these guys don't know about solo RTW non-stop is just not worth knowing. They have taken this activity to an artform. Don't just google them (although that is a good start), read the books. It is like reading the Manual of solo non-stop RTW.

After that, come back here with informed questions, I am sure someone will be happy to answer intelligent questions.

And if you come from the school of "there are no dumb questions", let me assure you that there is another (higher) school of thought that states "a dumb person can ask more questions than a wise man can answer". Please don't become that sort of dumb person.

Re: Time to beat the big record.

A danish guy did the RTW solo a few years back,as i recall he was about 170 days and he did not go round the great capes. He also noted that in those 170 days he never slept more than 1 full hour in a stretch.

A double non-stop circumnavigation? Reality check here, earth calling, earth calling

Reality check provided (from Wikipedia)

In 1986 Sanders set out again from Fremantle, and this time completed three solo non-stop circumnavigations aboard his 47-foot (14 m) yacht Parry Endeavour, rounding Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago just north of the Equator each time to ensure that his course covered both hemispheres.
Jon Sanders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Again from Wiki, this was 71,023 nm taking 658 days 21 hours and 18 minutes.

You are probably best off getting a Westsail 32 for this. They do 400 mile days, surf on waves well and I imagine you could sail around twice during the time when school lets out and starts up again.
Regarding buckets...you want to take only canvas ones. They are lighter. Best to dye them though. Blue for fresh water, green for salt water and brown for...oh...never mind.

Re: Time to beat the big record.

Well wotname, i didn't say it couldn't be done. And i do know that any time you say something here ya better have your facts right because someone will know.

But a 16 year old kid? No sailing experience? I'll stick with my earth calling.

But I bow humbly to your superior knowledge and cheerfully express my unabashed admiration for the fellow.
