Seating for toddler in cockpit

Hi All,

We have a soon to be 3 yr old toddler. She is pretty tall for her age but we are struggling to find a safe position for her in the cockpit (Moody 46). When she was much younger she sat in a bouncy seat on the floor in front of the companionway (seat was tied to handrails) but this is now no longer practical or safe.

A friend suggested a car seat to the left of the companionway below the sprayhood (fixed) but this is not really that practical either.

What have other families done? In another year she will be big enough to sit with us so this is a temporary measure to get us through!

We will sail all winter in England here so it needs to be secure - on both tacks.

Re: Seating for toddler in cockpit

Our daughter sailed with us from the time she was 6 months old until she left for college. When she was about 2, and until about 5, her spot on deck was a car seat secured in place in the fore part of the cockpit. It might have been a little inconvenient on our (then) Cal 2-29, but it worked. She also learned very early on that she was not permitted on deck absent a life-jacket and tether and by the time she was 5 was able to don her own. The car seat solution really is best (see following).
