Re: Reasons to ban children from cruising!

My favorite memories were sailing when I was a kid, and gave me the dream of building a sailboat to sail the world in. Now I have the opportunity to give other kids the opportunity to dream, it can't get much better than that!

Re: Reasons to ban children from cruising!

As the British Navy knew in the 19th century, it's terribly handy to have a few 10-14 year old children aboard a sailing vessel

-- They are cheap workers. Literally working for nothing more than food and grog (e.g. sugar)

-- They are small. Perfect for getting behind the engine. They even don't mind being hung by their feet to reach something in a dirty bilge.

-- They are light. You don't need a winch to pull them up the mast.

-- They can't go join another crew (by law)

-- They assume you are right (even if they hate you)

-- When they grow up, they feel obligated to invite you sailing on their boat

That is a true parents statement!

Dave, there are some places in the ocean that I shouldn't be! I have actually had one of those"kids" save my little boat when we broached and he jumped up on the topsides to release the jib! Not just proud parents, but proud of our home grown crew!
And it was mentioned how we should be considerate of the next generation. How better than to raise well adjusted kids that can take control of a situation and make level headed judgements!
Now I am not bringing my grandson across the Columbia bank yet, but I will someday. Nothing is impossible for this little humans, which may be why I like them so much.

AHHHHH... For once I would like to not have to fight my daughter for helm control!! This has been going on for like 15 months now! Though I wonder if it might have something to do with having given her the title of captain, it's really gone right to her head I think.

Re: Reasons to ban children from cruising!

An unfortunate but not unexpected outgrowth of a risk averse society. Call it the ultimate helicopter parent - the state. I just saw the movie about that young Dutch girl who circumnavigated after the gov't had initially taken guardianship her.

I learned more thru absorption while sailing as a child than I ever had thru book larnin'. So did my son. I can't wait to be bossed around by some impertinent grandchild!

Re: Reasons to ban children from cruising!

Pirates indeed! My yearly trip with my (now grown) sons is one of the best things we do. What's really good is they hate my beer so my ration is preserved. I don't have to pay them to go aloft to wash the masts ect. They do sleep a lot but when I sleep they record me to protest the snoring. They also turn a manual windless into an automatic one since I don't have to weigh anchor myself.

Re: Reasons to ban children from cruising!

My grandson conducting court with total strangers. I lurked from the next room and watched him mezmerize the guests. Willing to talk with authority on anything (politician or lawyer?) I never had that chutzpah.
