Pets - Canada to US and US to Canada

I am interested in recent experiences of traveling with cats and dogs and birds of: 1) Canadians cruising from Canada to US and 2) US citizens cruising from US to Canada. I am aware of the posted regulations but what requirements did you actually have to meet? What type animal did you have (cat, dog, bird)? Did you need international health certificate, regular veterinary computer health certificate, or none at all; what vaccinations and/or tests did you need to have? Was the procedure simple, difficult, or any problems encountered?

Usually just needed the dogs rabies tag, but I was asked once for the Vets papers for the shots. He still let us stay, but since then I always carry them.

Flying with a dog- we have been asked for a recent certificate of health, as well as rabies. We also give her a flea treatment.
