Nervous...Any Advice?

My husband and father are flying to Florida on thursday to sail our new boat back to TX. Where do I begin? We arranged for the seller to deliver the boat so there will be someone with experience onboard...but Im still worried. I'm sure this is completely normal but Ive never been completely out of touch with my husband. I wont know where he is...if he's alright..how things are going...you get the idea.

"sigh" any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jennybug - I don't know the arrangement there but here we have an extensive volunteer coastal radio network and they are always happy to pass on messages to and from concerned relatives. If you have something similar you could contact them to get a radio message out and ask your husband/father to do the same when they are sailing. Best wishes with the new boat!

You could look into renting an Iridium phone for the week or two.

I mean, if you are REALLY worried about being out of touch.

Tight schedules are the enemy of safe cruising. They make sailors say "yes" when the weather says "no." With modern weather forecasting, they should be able to pick a safe window.

It sounds like the boat is in good hands.

Crossed the Gulf about a nine times, four times from florida. It can take longer than planned, but is a good trip. There are a lot of places to stop in case of trouble (just head north ). Don't worry, this is what boats are made to do. BTW what kind of boat is it? Where are you guys going to keep her?

We bought a 1999 Hunter 45 Passage & will be keeping her in Coprus Christi. It's amazing that you have crossed the Gulf 9 times!!! The boat is now in St. Petersburg so they are planning a straight shot, right across to Corpus. I cant go because I have work and my youngest daughter just moved back in with us unexpectedly. It's upsetting because this is "our" dream and I feel a little left out. He's pcaking and planning and Im online playing Farm Town...how exciting. Total Bummer

I second the suggestion about using a SPOT system. Cheap and effective. You will know they are fine every time he presses the OK button.

buy spot, the toy to see where they are.....make them learn how to charge the device so it keeps telling you where they are.
make a pitcher of painkillers----with GOOD rum(NOT bacardi) ----drink them---
enjoy their trip....goood luck--isnt hard---the gulf isnt as bad as folks say----the waves do n0t get to be 30 ft tall nor is this hurrycame season..is allll goood......

Just bought the SPOT and we are picking it up tonight. It really eases my mind that this will enable us to track them. Even after the passage it will be a good tool to carry on board. If we take off for a few days and don't have cell service our family will know we are safe. :-)
