Personally I would not put my dogs through the ordeal of a long quarantine so it is easier to avoid the situation entirely.

People do take their dogs to Oz & NZ successfully, but you must comply with all the rules and regulations. Best to download from the Australian government the actual real rules and regs on animals and then make your decision. There are ways to reduce the 6 mos quarantine but in all cases you just have to decide whether having the pet with you for the move is worth the bureaucratic hoop jumping or not.
- - If it is then you do what is needed; and if not, then place the pet with a good family where you currently live.

We also need to remember, these are animals not people. Although we like to think it sometimes, our pets arent a part of the family, rather they enjoy the symbiotic relationship that we share. But as we know, most pets will "friend up" with anyone who provides the right treats.
We cant let our feelings for our critters get in the way of our own destinations, futures and experiences. Horrible to say perhaps, but its a practical reality.
Cheers

We have two sailing neighbours here in our marina at Brisbane that recently brought their dogs into Australia. They flew them into the country a month before they were due to arrive (from Fiji in one case) and they were in quarantine for that month. The time in quarantine depends on the countries the dogs have been in on the way.
It cost them about $4000 for each dog. Hope this helps.

Re: Moving to Australia with Dogs Onboard
I found the same thing. With proper pre trip shots, etc. flying the dog in the minimum quarantine is 1 month.
I personally wouldn't put my dog into a potentially terrifying extended situation of which I had no control or knowledge, and changed my plans accordingly.

Of course we can. It's not in the dogs interest to be shipped ahead and put in quarantine. We can find the dog a new good home or don't go while the dog's alive.

What if you train him to be a termite sniffing dog? Does he get time off for good behavior?

I don't see the big deal. If you follow their rules with microchip and shots and all that stuff you can get the quarantine down to 30 days.

Re: Moving to Australia with Dogs Onboard
The dogs have been on the boat for 2 yrs or so, nor going to walk on OZ, in a way they have been quarantined, but with a fanily that cares about them..
30 fays still equals 6 months doggie time in prison for living on a yacht.

Re: Moving to Australia with Dogs Onboard
Sure, but it's a helluva lot shorter than the 6 months being tossed around in this thread.
I've been to the quarantine place near Sydney to collect a dog (not mine) from Atlanta. It's a pretty decent place - huge actually. That dog was only in for 30 days.
Speaking of 30 days, time for a music break.

Re: Moving to Australia with Dogs Onboard
We are planning a sail around the world including our two dogs. We don't want to avoid Australia, it's kinda in the way. But I cannot determine if the quarantine can be spent on board our vessel or not. I will not consider stopping there for one moment if they intend to put our dogs in cages. I think it's beyond cruel and if you don't, you try sitting in a cage separated from everything and everybody you know and love even for one day.
I can provide any kind of test or documentation of canine good health, but the official website is clear about one thing... there is a mandatory 30 day quarantine at the very minimum. If they can spend it with us, on board, then perhaps not all is lost.

Contact AQIS direct and ask the question. Do it in writing via email and seek an explanation for the decision, they dont bite.

Re: Moving to Australia with Dogs Onboard
Did you ever think it might be cruel to take dogs on a small boat out in the ocean away from their natural way of life like running and doing what dogs do? I would plan on missing Australia and many other countries on your travels as I doubt Quarantine on your boat is allowed.
